TBT: Discussing 5 Nigerian Female Rappers

Nigerian female rappers deserve a lot of appreciation for the definite roles they have played in changing the face of the rap industry and giving their male counterpart a run for their money.

Eva Alordiah Nigerian Female RappersOn today’s edition of Throwback Thursday, we bring you 5 female rappers that deserve more applause and pat on the back, because they have been extraordinary. In no particular order:

5. Sasha P:Sasha PBorn Anthonia Yetunde Alabi, but popularly known as Sasha P, she remains one of the most loved female rappers in the country. She came to stardom in 2001, after her work with Trybes Record.

From there, she went on to release other tracks that cemented her place as a queen bee in the industry. Some of the pooular tracks are “Emi le Gan”, “Work It”, “Oya” and her first album “Finally Here”.

To prove to you that Sasha P does not come to play, she has won three (3) awards out of seven (7) nominations.

Although, she has not been up and doing in the rap industry as she used to be, she remains an enigma when it comes to rap.

4. Mo’CheddahMo'CheddahBorn Modupe-Oreoluwa Oyeyemi but popularly known as Mo’Cheddah is no stranger to the rap industry. She came to limelight with her hit single in 2009 “If You Want Me”. In 2010, she released her debut studio album, Franchise Celebrity with Knighthouse Entertainment which went on to win Channel O Music Video Awards for the “Best Female Video” category and MTV Africa Music Awards “Best New Artist” in 2010.

However, the romance between her and the label was short-lived, as she ended things with Knighthouse in 2012 to form her own record label.

3. MunaMunaAfter winning the 2007 Most Beautiful Girl In Nigeria, Munachi Gail Teresa Abii Nwankwo Munachi Abii, decided to explore her creative side, and rapping came under her radar.

Her stage name was first Babyrella, before she switched to Muna. Remember P-Square’s Ifunaya video? Yes, Mins was the beautiful lady there. She released her debut album, The Goddess which contained singles such as Killer Queen and I Fell Real

2. Weird MCWeird MCRemember Ijoya? Yes that song was the handiwork of Adesola Adesimbo Idowu who took the name Weird MC.

Although, she had been in the works for a long time, 2006, when she released her second album, After Da Storm brought her the fame she deserved. The hip hop song earned her an AMEN award for Most Pop Song, and a Channel O Music Video Award for Best Special Effect.

1. Eva AlordiahEva AlordiahEva Alordiah came to stardom in 2008, and just kept raising the bar for what hip hop should sound like. She easily beasts the rap game, with her flows and tight lyrics. She has over 15 nominations and 3 awards (Nigerian Entertainment Awards ‘Most Promising Act to Watch’ 2012, Eloy Awards ‘Female Rap Artiste of the Year’ 2011 and YEM Awards ‘Best Female Rap Single’ 2012). She ate other female rappers like nothing, Eva was that good.

However, in recent times, she seems to have taken a loving to Spoken Words Poetry, as against hard-core rap.

There are more female rappers in the industry that time will fail to write of their exploits. There’s Bouqui, Kemistry and a host of others.

To all the Nigerian female rappers out there, both known and upcoming, keep pushing hard. Keep rapping. Keep striving. Someday, the hustle go pay.
