Hardship: FG To Give Out N25K Monthly Across 15m Households

As part of efforts to lessen the economic hardship experienced by Nigerians, the federal government said it would give N25,000 per month to 15 million households across the country.

Wale Edun, the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance, stated in an interview on Channels Television that the federal government is trying to reduce the suffering, particularly for the vulnerable and impoverished.

He said: “But I think the important thing to point out, at this time, is that the focus of Mr President is on keeping his promise, particularly to the poor and the vulnerable. Food prices are elevated, and the purchasing power is limited and that is what Mr President is speaking directly to through the intervention programme of direct payments of N75,000 each over three months”.

“There was no time, I had an issue that I needed to resolve with him, in terms of crisis.

“If you look at the profile of those five members of the House of Representatives, they have their individual aspirants they are supporting towards the election.

“One of them is actually an aspirant, what do you expect from an aspirant? He wants to say something to demarket somebody who is having a great advantage; one other one is a director general of campaign to an aspirant.

Aiyedatiwa added that ” all of them have their own ambition who they want to be governor. That is an unprogressive position and the party has actually responded that there was no crisis in the party, that their are not at loggerheads with me.

Hardship: Why Free Distribution Of Grains Is Delayed – Presidency

President Bola Tinubu has given reasons behind the delay of the free distribution of 42,000 metric tonnes of grains to Nigerians to tackle the current food insecurity.

Recall that the Minister of Agriculture on February 8, promised that the federal government would distribute millet, maize and other food commodities to vulnerable Nigerians to ameliorate hardship.

But for almost three weeks, no grains or food commodities have been given to Nigerians as the economy bites hard with the high cost of food.

Explaining the delay, Special Adviser to the President Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga said the bagging of grains is ongoing in seven strategic places in the country.

Onanuga also said the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has been in charge of bagging the grains that would soon be delivered to indigent Nigerians.

He said this in a statement issued on Friday, reiterating the assurance that Nigerians will soon receive free gains.

The presidential aide also said that 60,000 metric tonnes of rice will be provided by the federal government to give to Nigerians.

“The Tinubu administration through the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security is in the final stages of releasing 42,000 metric tonnes of assorted food commodities to support the vulnerable population across the country,” Onanuga said in the statement.

“The grains in seven locations of strategic reserve, are now being bagged for onward delivery to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). The need to bag the grains, caused the delay as the bags were freshly ordered by the government.

“Nigerians will not need to pay for the grain bags, as they are free.

“This will be complemented by the 60,000 metric tonnes of milled rice to be purchased by the Federal Government from the Mega Rice Millers.

“Already, with the announcement of the impending releases of food commodities from the Strategic Reserve, there is a noticeable reduction in commodity prices across major grains markets in the country, Minister of Agriculture, Senator Abubakar Kyari.”

Diploma Graduate In Consensual Relationship With Me – Suspended UNICAL Dean, Cyril Ndifon

The Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Calabar, Cyril Ndifon, who is currently suspended, has asserted that he engaged in a consensual relationship with a diploma graduate referred to as TKJ (name withheld in compliance with a court order to protect her identity), the individual he was accused of s*xually harassing.

The professor is currently standing trial on amended four counts of alleged s*xual harassment and gratification preferred against him by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission.

Also joined in the matter is his lawyer, Sunny Anyanwu, who was alleged to have harassed TKJ and asked her to shun the ICPC’s invitation.

READ ALSO: Nigeria Is A Very Poor Country, Our Wealth Is Overestimated – Bayo Onanuga
TKJ who is the ICPC’s star witness had during her testimony accused the professor of demanding her virginity and coerced her into performing oral s*x for admission into the LLB program at the institution.

However, in a copy of the no-case submission filed by the Prof’s lawyer, Joe Agi (SAN) sighted by our correspondent on Thursday, Ndifon urged the court to discharge and acquit him, adding that the series of chats suggested a consensual relationship between them.

In the chats, the professor noted that they conveyed their love, affection, and concern for each other’s safety.

He said, “What are the elements of the offence(a) causing fear (b) threat (c) fear for safety? None of the above elements were contained in count 1. Nor was there any evidence adduced to show fear, safety, or blackmail from TKJ or Professor Ndifon, particularly by Exhibit “H” The chats show clearly that both 1 Defendant and TKJ have a consensual relationship where they expressed their love, affection, and worries for each other safety particularly that of the 1 Defendant. ”

He also claimed that evidence before the court shows that text messages between him and TKJ were that of emotional feelings between two lovers and did not in any way put either of the party in fear.

Ndifon also said the ICPC violated his fundamental human rights by seizing his phones without a court order.

The suspended dean said, “The commission who at this time was desperate to create, search for any conceivable crime seized the telephone of the 1st Defendant who was under their custody and without obtaining an order of the court as required by Section 45 of the Cyber Crime Act in breach of his fundamental right as guaranteed by Section 37 of the 1999 Constitution as amended broke into his phone and started going through his phone in search for an offense and without respect to his right to privacy.

“Then on seeing nude and pornographic pictures in the 1st Defendant’s phone jumped at the Cybercrime Act to investigate the so-called offence of cyberstalking. This is not only exposing them as an ungovernable monster but like a knight—errant that goes about looking for skirmishes and battles all over the Mace. My Lord if this is allowed to stand, then we are all in trouble. This cannot be the intention of the lawmakers or the law.”

Ndifon also urged the court to decline jurisdiction on the case because, under cross-examination, Lucy Chima, a prosecution witness one asserted that they received several oral and written complaints but never mentioned TKJ as one of such complainants and that TKJ was not even listed as a witness in the originating charge but “surfaced after the amended charge was filed”.

He also contended that in the instant case, counts 1 and 2 which deal with sending and receiving nude videos and count 3 of the original charge, are not within the jurisdiction of the court as Section 26(2) and 61(3) of the Corrupt Practice and Other Related Offences Act, 2020 prevent the court from entertaining any of the offences brought.

“Now, let me turn to Count 4 in the original charge which is from the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) Act, 2015. From the Charge, proof of evidence before this Honourable Court, it is submitted that the case was not initiated by due process of law thereby depriving your lordship of jurisdiction,”
 he added

The adoption of written addresses on the no-case submission has been fixed for February 27, 2024.

‘’Can you imagine that workers from Cotonou are no more collecting Naira because a CFA is now N3000. Can you imagine that CFA10, 000 is now N25, 000. Ten Million CFA is now N25, 000. So they are no more collecting Naira.

As it stands now, to clear a container in Nigeria is N18 million per container and with the depreciation in Naira, every commodity increases in price every 30 minutes.

The scary part is that the way it is going is that even the rich and the poor, nobody is safe. People are still selling their old markets. Very soon. their old market will finish. They will now start selling the new market they bought with this current prices. The poor can no longer feed. It will now be survival of the fittest. Nobody is safe’

“There are some officers of this government that their houses went down. It has to go. We are not out to take the entire four bedrooms; if it is one room that contravenes, you can reconstruct and have three rooms.

“What I can assure you is that nobody will or willingly be attacked by virtue of race, gender, colour, ethnicity. That I can put on the table, and say that please if you know of any, I will be the first to apologise and make amends immediately.”

Nigerians Shouldn’t Hold Us Responsible For Food Price Hike – Dangote Group

Dangote Group and his Companies have denied being behind the rising prices of food items all over the country.

She stated this in an interview with the BBC Hausa Service.

She said, “We’re not responsible for the price hike… we buy the raw sugar in dollars from Brazil; they don’t sell to us in naira. The same thing with the crude salt and every other thing, that’s the issue.

“It’s only cement that we get its raw materials in Nigeria. But its processing chain lies in dollars; the trucks that ferry the product, gas, tires, and spare parts are all in dollars.’’

She, however, claimed that the group was unaware that cement was retailed at N15,000 in the markets, adding that the price of 50kg would be around N7,000 to N8,000 depending on the location.

Amaju Pinnick vs Davido: Court Declines Singer’s Application For Stay Of Proceedings

The application filed by Afrobeats star, Davido seeking a stay of proceedings in the N2 billion suit filed against him by Brownhill Investment Company Limited owned by former NFF president, Amaju Pinnick, over the annual ‘Warri Again Concert, has been rejected by a Delta State High Court sitting in Effurun.

Amaju’s company filed the lawsuit against Davido after he failed to perform at a concert in Warri which he was fully paid for. The company is asking the court to award N2 billion as general damages against Davido. The company is also asking the court for N150 million as legal and professional fees and an additional N30 million as the cost of filing the suit.

Defendants in the suit are David Adeleke a.k.a “Davido,” and his music label, Davido Music Worldwide Limited.

At the hearing in the matter recently, Davido’s counsel, Norrison Quakers, SAN, informed the court that there was a pending appeal and that the defendants had filed a motion for a stay of proceedings. Quakers further told the court that the defendants had been served with a copy of the claimant’s counter affidavit to the said motion for stay.

However, he applied to withdraw the motion and submitted that the Court of Appeal had become seized with authority over the proceedings pending before the lower court.

The counsel to Amaju’s company, Kelechi Onwuegbuchulem, did not oppose the application to withdraw the motion and the court granted the same accordingly.

The court in a bench ruling upheld the claimant’s argument and held that until an order staying further proceedings is obtained from the Court of Appeal, the High Court will continue with proceedings in the case.

The court also granted the motion on notice seeking to regularize the Amaju’s company’s reply to the statement of defence and directed that Pre-Trial Conference, PTC, forms be filed within 14 days in line with the rules of the court. The court adjourned the case to March 21, 2024, for a pre-trial conference.

Recall that Davido had, in his preliminary objection challenged the jurisdiction of the court, because the case ought not to take place in Effurun

But the court in its ruling dismissed the preliminary objection.

According to the songstress, she bagged a degree early because her mother insisted that she must graduate before pursuing her music career and she wanted to be a teenage pop star.

She disclosed this in a recent interview with American media giant Billboard News.

Starr recounted: “I got into the university at 14. I feel like my mum has been using music to blackmail me since I was a child. She was like, ‘If you want to do music, you have to do this.’ When she suggested we relocate to Lagos from Benin Republic, I declined initially but she convinced me that Lagos is the land of music.

There Is Nothing Like N30bn Being Given To States For Food Security – Governor Makinde Denies Akapbio’s Claim

Governors in the country have debunked claims made by Senate President Godswill Akpabio that the Tinubu-led Federal Government disbursed N1.08tn to states to address the food crisis being experienced in various states.

READ ALSO: Nigeria Is A Very Poor Country, Our Wealth Is Overestimated – Bayo Onanuga
While speaking at the plenary on Tuesday, February 20, Akpabio said an unconfirmed report indicated that state governors received N30bn each from the Federation Account to ameliorate inflation and the high cost of food in their respective states.

“I must say that unverified report has it that each of the state governments in the last few months has received additional N30bn from Federal Inland Revenue Service outside their normal allocations from the Federation Account to assist them in ameliorating the food situation. We believe that every state government should utilise the funds received towards ensuring that food is available in the country. So, the state governments have a lot to do. They are closer to the people and I do not want to mention local government because most of the local governments are controlled by the state governors.World Bank

My belief is that if the state government does what is needed, then the local government will be involved in sharing to make sure that these things get to the people. But we must not overlook the fact that Nigerians are not going to be interested in stories. Nigerians want to see action. Nigerians want to eat and we will provide food for them, there is no excuse. Despite what we met on the ground,
” Akpabio said

READ ALSO: Cheers And Ovation As Shi’ite Leader, Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky And Wife Returns To Nigeria After Medical Trip To Iran – Photos
However, the Vice-Chairman of the NGF, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, has denied Akpabio’s claim.

Speaking at a function in Iseyin on Thursday, February 22, Governor Makinde who spoke on behalf of state governors, said he can speak for himself and other state governors and that no such money was disbursed to any state.

“I can speak for Oyo State, and I can also speak for any of my colleagues because I am the Vice-Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum. I know when things happen. And if we want to play politics, we will keep quiet and say, let it slide, but we are not going to let this slide.

First, the FIRS cannot give any money to any state; it is not possible. All revenues accruing to our country go into the federation account, and the money is distributed to all the tiers of government. The Federal Government does not give money to the state; the money in the federation account belongs to all of us, and it is not only to the Federal Government.

We need to engage with our people; if our policies are not working, we need to listen to them and amend them. If the number three citizen says this is an unverified report, why does he need to say it? Does that give confidence to our people, or does it solve the problem of hunger and anger in our land?

Let me say it clearly: for Oyo State and my colleagues, there is nothing like N30bn being given for food security to the states, and I stand to be challenged” he said.

Other state governors have also denied the claim.

NLC Proposed Strike Act Of Sabotage, says Coalition

The Coalition of Nigeria Civil Society Forum (CNCSF) has alleged that the proposed strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is an act of sabotage with an ulterior motive of collecting gratification from the government at the expense of the unsuspecting public.

Organised Labour recently threatened to stage a two-day nationwide protest against the hardship in the land on February 28 and 28.

But the Trade Union Congress (TUC) on Thursday pulled out of the planned action complaining that the decision to embark on the action was not collectively taken.

Admitting that Nigerians are going through difficult times at the moment, Convener of the Coalition, Dr. Godwin Abutu at briefing in Abuja, noted that the government has persistently assured Nigerians of rallying around the clock to ameliorate the sufferings of the people with different incentives.

Abutu however noted that efforts by the Federal Government to resolve the matter are being sabotaged.

“While we are not worried over the empty and baseless threats to drag the government through the strike, we are once again concerned that this group has always used these threats to collect gratifications from the government and betray the people, a situation we are out to arrest this time as spokespersons of the masses of this country.

“To ensure fair distribution, we have decided that the elderly and vulnerable will receive the rice free of charge, while others will be able to purchase it at the original price before the increase in the value of the dollar. This will allow us to sustain the initiative until the dollar issue is resolved.”

“The state government will commence to offset the backlog of inherited deductions. To this end, we are immediately committing N500 million monthly payments towards outstanding deductions. On Wednesday, thousands of Nigerians gathered at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport and the National Stadium in Abuja to extend a warm welcome to Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky, the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), commonly known as Shi’ites, upon his return to the country.

The Islamic cleric had been away on a medical trip.

Addressing the crowd, Sheikh Zakzaky conveyed his gratitude for the warm reception, marking a significant occasion.

The event stands as the first major gathering where the Islamic leader addressed his followers and the public since his release from Kaduna prison in 2021 after a High Court in Kaduna State acquitted him of all charges brought against him by the government.

Zakzaky embarked on a journey to Iran on October 11, 2023, seeking treatment for himself and his wife, Malama Zeenah Ibrahim. The health issues arose from the Nigerian army’s attack on their house in December 2015.

In December 2015, during the administration of then-President Muhammadu Buhari, the Nigerian Army attacked Sheikh Zakzaky’s residence, resulting in the tragic deaths of hundreds of his disciples, including family members.

Following the attack, Sheikh Zakzaky and his wife were arrested and detained for close to six years, ultimately gaining their freedom on July 28, 2021.

After two years of their release, in October 2023, the Nigerian government, now under Bola Ahmed Tinubu, returned their travel documents, permitting them to seek medical treatment abroad.

On Wednesday, February 21, 2024, at approximately 1:25 pm, Zakzaky, accompanied by his wife, Zeenah, and their entourage, returned to Nigeria. They landed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja and proceeded to the National Stadium, where a reception had been organised to celebrate their return.

Loans Nigeria Taking To Shore Up Naira Are ‘Meaningless’ – Utomi

Nigerian economist, Pat Utomi has called out the Federal Government over the dwindling value of the naira.

According to him, the loans that are being taken by the Nigerian government are ‘meaningless’ and are not a solution to the current economic problem in Nigeria.

Utomi said this while discussing Nigeria’s economic issues and food shortage problem in an interview on Thursday.

READ ALSO: Economic Hardship: Pray for Tinubu, It’s Not Easy But He Means Well For The Country – Wike Begs Nigerians
The professor said, “There’s no surprise at all about where we are, I saw it coming. We just kept going the wrong way and seriously pursued what will get us into the ditch.”

He said that those who were qualified to lead the different sectors of this country were not in power as meritocracy became a joke in Nigeria, and people who manned positions did so not out of competence, but out of nepotistic influence.

Utomi then said that the loans being taken to shore up the naira are ‘meaningless,’ as the loans will only be able to hold the naira for a matter of days before the currency dips again.

READ ALSO: Nigeria Is A Very Poor Country, Our Wealth Is Overestimated – Bayo Onanuga
He said, “We should not be panicking and rushing and borrowing 1.3 billion here, 3 billion there to shore up the naira. We should realise that the naira is tumbling because we have not been producing for years, it’s been looking at us. Now, we have the capacity, again, like an army on the march, to really move into production.

“We have to have a strategy. Take our factor endowments- okay, this part of the country is strong here in terms of endowments, that part of the country is strong there, and literally organise with industry clusters, young people moving there, the incentives, and try and take on specific value chains. Use limited industrial policy.

“Clearly, I am not suggesting what some people are rushing into- return to import substitution type, general tariff protection, those don’t work. You will create permanent infant industries. You must take our latent comparative advantage on particular value chains and really aim to dominate those value chains, beginning from education of people around there.”

Utomi then addresses the issue of food security in the nation as he explained,“The reason that food prices are the way they are is significantly because we are not producing food. The farms have been abandoned by farmers who feel insecure, that’s a critical reason. How do you deal with that? There’s short term, there’s medium term, and long term. Immediate short term, if you want to call it that, is to ensure that whatever they are, grain reserves, all of those, shore up immediate supply. But immediately you begin to deal with that, we must mobilise every kind of security force available.”

He said that the idea of state police that is being sought to be implemented should cascade further down, and that the FG should strengthen local militia to protect the farmlands and assure farmers that they are safe.

“Let the country know that we are in the moral equivalence of a war. Let all hands literally get on deck in an organized manner, almost like an army on the march, and we will get food out. Example effect will lead to prices beginning to calm,” he said.

Utomi was then questioned concerning the upcoming Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting and how the discussions there could ease Nigeria’s economic problems, to which he answered, “Where we are right now, we shouldn’t focus too much on monetary policy. We need to go beyond monetary policy. But of course, we must work monetary policy well.”

The professor then said, “I sometimes think that what we are going through is good for Nigeria, because we need something to make us recalibrate. We have a total misconception of what economic growth is about because we have had this windfall with which we used to create big government.”

He then gave his suggestions on how to stabilise the economy saying, “My first suggestion is that we stay away from panicking, because what happens in this kind of circumstance is that they panic. They throw all kinds of policies that won’t work, and then you will go into a downward spiral. You must calm down, look at the fundamentals- why do we have this problem. Don’t get rushed into a push from outside who don’t feel the pressure, but don’t get cornered into people who just react. Just calmly look at what your national strategy should be, and systematically implement.”

Senate Passes South East Development Commission Bill

Nearly two months following its approval by the House of Representatives, the Senate passed a bill at plenary on Thursday, aiming to establish the South East Development Commission.

During plenary on Wednesday, Michael Opeyemi, the Senate Leader, and senator representing Ekiti Central, presented the Bill for an Act to Act as a Catalyst to Develop the Commercial Potentials of the South East and for Other Connected Matters, 2024 (HB.626) for concurrence and second reading.

The House of Representatives passed the long-awaited bill in December 2023, after years of agitation and attempts at the National Assembly.

Tthe bill was passed by the 8th Senate but was not received by former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The passage of the bill during Senate plenary yesterday followed the presentation of the bill by Senator Bamidele and consideration at the Committee of the Whole.

Certain amendments were made to the bill before its passage.

The inclusion of representatives of the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, was expunged after Senator Adamu Aliero’s observation was taken into consideration.

Rather, it was agreed that each of the six geopolitical zones would have a representative on the board of the proposed commission.

Senator Jibrin Barau, who lauded the decision, said: “As a national body, other zones should be represented on the commission, as done with other regional bodies such as the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, and the North East Development Commission, NEDC.”

The Senate President then ruled that clause 2(c) should be adjusted to accommodate the amendment.

Also, Clause 2 (h) was amended to give designations to the three executive directors as requested by senators Osita Izunaso and Osita Ugwu. and supported by Senator Diket Plank (Plateau Central).
It was agreed that the commission should have three executive directors, for Finance and Account, Projects and Corporate Services.

Returning from the Committee of the Whole, the Senate President ruled on clause-by-clause consideration and the bill, passed for a third reading, was eventually passed.

Akpabio expressed confidence that the bill will be assented to by President Bola Tinubu, considering the urgent need to leverage the approved commission to fast-track the development of the Southeast geopolitical zone.

Gov Otu Announces Fresh APC Governorship Direct Primaries In Edo

Cross Rivers State Governor and newly appointed chairman of the APC governorship direct primary election committee, Bassey Otu,  has announced plans for a fresh primary across all 192 wards in the state’s 18 local government areas in Edo State.

The announcement came during a press briefing held at the Lushville Hotel and Suites in Benin’s Government Reservation Area (GRA) on Thursday.

Governor Otu confirmed the cancellation of last Saturday’s contentious primary election, paving the way for a re-run scheduled for Thursday, February 22.

The change in leadership and subsequent decision for a fresh primary follow the removal of Governor Hope Uzodimma from the position of Chairman of the Elections Committee.

This development was disclosed in a statement by the APC National Organising Secretary, Sulaiman Argungu, which noted that Governor Otu would lead the efforts to ensure a transparent and fair re-run poll.

The revamped Primary Election Committee will also feature former Osun State deputy governor, Mrs. Titilayo Laoye-Tomori; APC’s flagbearer in the Plateau State 2023 governorship election, Nentanwe Goshwe; Umar Musa; Lawan Garba, and Rabiu Suleiman, who will serve as the Secretary.

The call for Governor Uzodimma’s replacement came from four leading aspirants — Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, Chief Lucky Imasuen, Senator Monday Okpebholo, and General Charles Airhiavbere (retd.) — who expressed a lack of confidence in Uzodimma’s ability to oversee a fair electoral process after the disputed primary results.

Dennis IdahosaGovernor Uzodimma had previously declared Dennis Idahosa, a member of the House of Representatives, as the winner of the primary, stating that Idahosa secured 40,483 votes to lead the gubernatorial race.

The controversy and disputes that marred the initial primary led the APC National Working Committee to deem the poll inconclusive, prompting an emergency meeting to address the crisis and ultimately decide on the conduct of a fresh primary.

As Edo State’s APC members and aspirants prepare for the re-run, the focus is on ensuring the integrity of the primary election process and selecting a candidate who will represent the party in the upcoming gubernatorial election.

Economic Hardship: Be Patient, We’re Working Day And Night – CBN Assures Nigerians

The Central Bank of Nigeria has urged Nigerians to exercise patience as the bank’s management is working diligently to strengthen the Naira.

The CBN Governor said this at the 2024 public lecture entitled, “Recent Developments in the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market: Issues, Options and Way Forward”, organized by the Nigerian Economic Society, NES, at the CBN Centre of Excellence Hall, University of Ibadan yesterday.

READ ALSO: Economic Hardship: Pray for Tinubu, It’s Not Easy But He Means Well For The Country – Wike Begs Nigerians
Speaking on behalf of the Governor of the Central Bank, Dr Olayemi Cardoso, at the event, Dr Usman Opanachi, Department of Monetary Policy, CBN said, “Anytime Naira is on trial, the CBN is also on trial. We are working day and night to address the challenges and we hope things will work out. “The exchange rate features nearly in every sector. The exchange rate and inflation are very high now. The exchange rate is a problem on its own”.

“Excess demand for forex in Nigeria is a legendary problem. It has just been there and over the years, the bank has implemented various strategies to address this problem. Those strategies have only been able to provide some temporary relief.”
“The Central Bank of Nigeria does not supply or produce dollars; It is naira that it produces. CBN management thinks when you hold the price of a commodity that is determined by Fx down artificially, a time comes when you will not be able to do that.”

“The thinking of the new management of CBN is that the policies you have are intended to address the problem. The approach the management has adopted is the Market forces approach. The bank now allows the market forces to play a greater role in the determination of the price of naira.”

READ ALSO: Nigeria Is A Very Poor Country, Our Wealth Is Overestimated – Bayo Onanuga
A renowned economist, Prof Sam Olofin, who delivered the public lecture said, it will be difficult for the CBN to control the foreign exchange saying the parallel market forces have taken dominance.

He added that the market forces are so powerful and influential and to worsen the matter, the law that established the foreign exchange does not allow anyone to call them to order.

On the evolution of the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market, he said, “we are only applying the same old drugs on a patient without any good results.

The parallel markets are outside the purview of the CBN.”

In his welcome address, the President, the Nigerian Economic Society, Prof Adeola Adenikinju advised the FG to consult economists on the weak economy adding, “The choice of today’s theme is apt as it is perhaps the most important issue in Nigeria today. From Aso Rock to the CBN headquarters, and NNPC Towers, from Marina Street in Lagos to Bodija Market in Ibadan, the fish seller in Yenagoa to the suya seller in Sokoto to the farmer in Markurdi, the exchange rate is on the lips of everyone. Hence, the choice of the topic for the 2024 NES Public Lecture.

“The subject of foreign exchange is within the ambit of economics. The exchange rate is a price. However, for an import-dependent economy like ours, it is a price that influences other prices in the economy – products, money, and factor markets. The spike in inflation in the last few months in particular has been largely driven by the exchange rate. The pass-through effect from the exchange rate to other prices is quite high”.

“The government, especially the CBN, has reacted to the sharp and persistent devaluation of the naira with a rash of circular policies. At times, we worry that the effects of a particular policy have not been assessed before others are quickly thrown into the mix. This action tends to add to uncertainty and the flight to safety postures of economic agents, who continue to hold dollars outside the banking system.”

The Chairman of the event, Prof Antonia Simbine, Director General, Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research, said all that Nigerians are interested in is the solution to the various challenges.

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof Kayode Adebowale was represented by Prof Olamakinde Olapegba, (DVC Administration) at the event.

See his post below:

“Did you listen to the Senate deliberations today? What we witnessed in the Red Chamber underscores the vital role of legislative oversight and the importance of speaking truth, standing with the people, and fulfilling our constitutional roles.

Today’s inquiries were those that the 9th Senate should have pursued but evidently did not, resulting in the current repercussions for their inaction.

It brought back memories of the 8th Senate’s insistence on transparency and accountability. I remember when we were asking for details of the foreign loan requests brought by the Buhari administration and were portrayed as enemies of the state and obstructive to national progress.Asset declaration

I must acknowledge the 10th Senate’s effort in even deliberating on these crucial issues.

This moment stands as a powerful reminder that the legislative arm of government must effectively play its constitutional role at all times in the interest of the people they represent, despite the personal sacrifices that may need to be made. Only then will the public and the people truly benefit.

I sincerely hope we learn from the mistakes of the past.”

The Command in a letter signed by CSP Ya’u Musa Kangiwa asked the activist to come along with at least two of his executives on Thursday.

The letter reads in part, “I am directed by the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command to invite you for a meeting. You are to come along with at least two (2) of your Exco. The Meeting is slated to hold as follows:

“On arrival, you are to contact ASP OMOKENI GREEN, the Station Officer, State Intelligence Department, to facilitate the said meeting. Your attendance in persons will be highly appreciated.”

“Accept, as always, the assurances of the Commissioner of Police’s esteemed regards, please,”
 the statement added.

The protest began in Ibadan’s Mokola area, and the protesters, mostly youths, barricaded the Mokola under-bridge and the Queen Elizabeth Road.

This led to traffic congestion in some parts of the city.

The protesters could be heard chanting: ‘Tinubu Ole (Tinubu is a thief),’ ‘E bi n pawa (We’re hungry),’ as they moved on the road.

Some of the placards had inscriptions such as ‘Open Boarder, End Hardship’, ‘End food hike and inflation’, ‘The poor is starving’, ‘Tinubu, don’t forget your promises’, amongst others.

Armed police officers were seen at the protest location to prevent the breakdown of law and order.

Earlier this month, similar protests were held in Minna and Suleja, the commercial nerve centres of Niger State.

The angry protesters called on President Tinubu’s government to end the hardship and unbearable inflation in the country.

They also lamented the hikes in the prices of gas and fuel in the country.

The protesters chanted protest songs, while security agents including policemen looked on.

However, Yakubu Garba, Deputy Governor of Niger State, said the government was aware of the pain and hardship facing families in the country.

Yakubu told the protesters that the government was working towards reducing the cost of living and the economic implications of the petrol subsidy removal.

The leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) had also declared a two-day nationwide mass protest slated for February 27 and 28 over the biting hardship in the country.

Account For N30billion Allocated To You To Tackle Food Scarcity – SERAP Sues State Governors

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), a civil society organization, has issued a threat to sue Nigerian state governors over the allocation of N30 billion each to address the high cost of food in their respective states.

SERAP said the state governors should be compelled to account for the N30 billion received from the Federal Government outside their normal allocations.

“We’re suing Nigeria’s state governors to compel them to account for the N30 billion that Mr Godswill Akpabio reportedly said each governor has received from the Federal Government [outside their normal allocations] to address the high cost of food in their states,” SERAP said on Wednesday.

Senate President Godwin Akpabio on Wednesday stated that the 36 state governors in the country had received an additional N30 billion from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to tackle the food scarcity situation in the country.

The Senate President who said this during one of the plenary sessions of the federal lawmakers described the protests held in some major cities in the country against rising hunger and hardship as sponsored by political stakeholders.

Akpabio added that the newly released funds for the state governors were different from their monthly allocations and urged them not to divert the funds to another use different from solving foodstuff scarcity.

He said, “We can see a lot of protests here and there, most of those sponsored protests are not aware of the kind of efforts being made by this Senate to tackle the situation together with a joint management team of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“I must say that unverified report has it that each of the state governments in the last few months has received additional N30 billion from Federal Inland Revenue Service, outside their normal allocation from the federation account to assist them in ameliorating the food situation, we believed that every state government should utilise the funds so received towards ensuring that food is available.”

“This Senate will not rubber-stamp anything that we feel is not in the interest of Nigeria,”
 he added.

Japa: Canada To Stop Work Permit For Nigerians And Other Foreign Students

Starting February 15, 2024, the Canadian government has modified the requirements for the Post-Graduation Work Program (PGWP) for international students.

Students who have completed a master’s degree programme within two years will be eligible for a three-year PGWP if they meet all other qualification criteria.

In its website, Canada, however, revealed that from September 1, 2024, foreign students enrolled in curriculum licensing agreement scheme will no longer be eligible for PGWP.

READ ALSO: I’m Too Busy To Think About Second Term As WTO DG – Okonjo-Iweala
Also, the extraordinary measures for distance learning and PGWP will remain valid.

Canada designed PGWP as an open work permit given to international students upon completion of their studies in Canada.

The programme holders are free to work anywhere in the country for any employer for as many hours as they deem fit.

The duration of their PGWP depends on the level and length of their studies and the expiry date of their passports, whichever comes first.

About the eligibility, the foreign students are eligible if they graduate from a designated learning institution (DLI) and are willing to stay in Canada temporarily to work.

According to reports, a DLI is a school approved by Canada’s provincial or territorial government to host international students.

Graduates are not automatically eligible for a PGWP, as candidates need to check the DLI list to determine if they qualify.

The development was instituted amid a previous report that the Canadian government has placed a ban on Nigerians and other foreigners from owning houses in the country.

This is due to the acute housing deficit in the country due to an influx of international students and migrant workers.

FG Benefiting From Dollar-to-Naira hike – Ali Ndume

Senator Ali Ndume has revealed that the federal government benefits from naira depreciation against the dollar.

According to him, the depreciation means the federal government will gain more revenue to fund its 2024 budget.

Ndume opined that the 2024 budget, which was presented by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu last November, is a ‘dollarised’ budget in terms of income, as most of the government’s revenue comes from crude oil exports, which are priced in dollars. He added that as the value of the dollar increases, the government would have more naira to spend on its expenditure, which is denominated in naira.

READ ALSO: Nigeria Is A Very Poor Country, Our Wealth Is Overestimated – Bayo Onanuga
He stated that Nigeria’s major product, crude oil is still in high demand in the global market and that the country will benefit from the current dollar-to-naira exchange rate.

“Don’t forget that this budget is a ‘dollarised’ budget, especially in terms of income. And when it comes to the terms of the expenditure, it’s in naira. So if we are getting our money in dollars and the value of the dollar is up, that means we will have more naira in terms of what we spend, because we are not spending in dollars, we are spending in naira, while we are getting our revenue in dollars.

READ ALSO: ’m Too Busy To Think About Second Term As WTO DG – Okonjo-Iweala
Truly, the value of naira against the dollar has fallen but we are selling our major product that we generate income in dollars. And that means any dollar we get now will also be valued at the current dollar-to-naira exchange rate.

So if you do the analysis critically, it may mean if you balance it up, we may have more money to fund our budget. So technically, Nigeria is even benefiting from the dollar-to-naira hike.” he said.

Lift Sanctions On Mali, Burkina Faso And Niger Republic – Gowon Beg ECOWAS

However, while addressing a press conference at the ECOWAS Commission’s headquarters, Gowon, expressed worry that the decision by Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger Republic to exit the ECOWAS threatens the unity of the bloc with far-reaching implications for ordinary citizens.

“It saddens me to learn that ECOWAS is threatened with disunity following the announcement by Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger—three important member states of their intention to leave the community.

“The impact of such a decision will have far-reaching implications for ordinary citizens who have been the major beneficiaries of regional integration.

“The ECOWAS authorities should immediately consider the implementation of the lifting of all sanctions that have been imposed on Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali, and Niger,” he said.

The former Head of State also urged the West African leaders, including leaders of the three countries planning to exit, to re-unite for peace and stability in the region.

Economic Hardship: Shettima And Akpabio Are Deceiving You, Nigerians Are Suffering – Primate Ayodele To Tinubu

The leader of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Primate Elijah Ayodele has sent a message to President Bola Tinubu.

Speaking on Thursday, he urged Tinubu not to listen to Vice President Kashim Shettima and Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s statement describing the recent protests against hardship as sponsored.

He informed Tinubu that Shettima and Akapbio are deceiving him because Nigerians are suffering and this informed their decision to storm the streets to express their grievances.

In a statement signed by his spokesman, Oluwatosin Osho, Ayodele berated the duo for being insensitive with the feelings of Nigerians and reducing their grievances to mere political talks when the government is supposed to be catering for the needs of its citizens.

He said: ‘’The country needs urgent action otherwise Nigeria will continue to experience difficulty. Tinubu should not mind those who are deceiving him, people are in pain and no one is sponsoring any protest.

“People are angry and feeling the heat of the economy. Tinubu should ignore any side talks that are not relevant to what is happening at this moment, everything is upside down.

‘’Tinubu should act before it’s too late. Akpabio’s statement about the protest isn’t a wise talk; it’s simply insensitive. Shetimma and Akpabio saying protests are sponsored is out of character.

“Nobody is sponsoring anything, the people are just hungry and these are what God said will happen in your government. Nigeria doesn’t deserve such irrelevant statements now. Instead of blaming people, your government should get to work.”

Honour And Implement Our Agreement – ASUU Tells FG

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU has begged the Federal Government to come to its rescue.

ASUU asked FG to honour and implement the agreement the union entered with it to forestall industrial action.

ASUU Coordinator in charge of Kano Zone, Mr Abdulqadir Muhammad, stated this at a news conference at the end of a zonal meeting on Wednesday in Kano.

He said the issues included renegotiation of the Federal Government–ASUU 2009 agreement, reached when the exchange rate to the U.S. dollar was N146 as against the current N1,900.

Muhammad said the exchange rate has eroded its salaries by 90 per cent.

He lamented that the Federal Government was adamant to sign the draft agreement reached with the union after the composition of new leadership of the negotiation committee.

“Therefore, the union calls on President Bola Tinubu to immediately set in motion the process of upward-reviewing and signing of the Nimi Briggs Committee’s renegotiated draft agreement as a mark of goodwill, and to forestall industrial crisis and restore hope for Nigeria’s public universities,” he said.

Muhammad, however, confirmed that members of the union had received partial payment of their seven months withheld salaries, and stressed the need to ensure full payment of the remaining balance.

He also urged the Kaduna government to pay the five-month withheld salaries of Kaduna State University.

While calling for payment of the Earned Academic Allowances and promotion arrears abandoned after agreement, Muhammad condemned the dissolution of the Governing Councils of public universities, adding the action contravened Universities Miscellaneous Acts and respective university laws.

He further advocated review of the Nigeria University Commission, NUC, Act, to check proliferation of universities in the country without adequate provision for funding.

On the state of the nation, the union decried the spate of insecurity, poverty, unemployment, rising cost of living, displacement and destitution in the country.

“ASUU uses this opportunity to call on all patriots in the media, civil society, labour movement and student groups to supports its altruistic struggle to reposition Nigerian public universities.

“Finally, the zone urges President Bola Tinubu to faithfully implement the contents of the agreement it freely signed with the unions through collective bargaining,” he said.

Naira Forex: BDC Operators Plan Automation To Tackle Street Trading, Speculators, Others

The Association of Bureau De’Change Operators of Nigeria has finalized arrangements to automate its trading operations, aiming to eradicate the influence of market speculators and street traders.

This was as the association backed the recent clampdown by the government on persons selling and buying foreign currencies on the streets.

Since the year started, Nigeria’s local currency has depreciated severely, sliding down to N1,900 on Wednesday owing to low liquidity and surging demand for the US dollar.

The ABCON President, Aminu Gwadabe, speaking in an interview on Wednesday, said the association has developed an automation platform, which, if okayed by the Central Bank of Nigeria, would help revolutionise the retail FX market.

He noted that the automation process will be launched in three weeks pending a “no objection” approval from the

Gwadabe said, “We have now put a lot of recommendations on how we can at least utilise technology, innovation, and automation in our operations.

“In three weeks, we will automate the system. We already have the automation system in place just for the CBN to give us the approval for “No Objection” that is all we asking.

“We can entirely automate the industry of any retail trader, we will automate them in three weeks, we already built the automation platform it is there for them. We have sent it to them, and we are only waiting for ‘no objection’ approval. This innovation will also eliminate street trading.”

Gwadabe further advised that the ongoing raids and arrests of traders should not be misconstrued, revealing that FX street traders ambush customers of licensed operators, thereby causing a lull in their operations.

He added, “What is happening is not targeted at licenced Bureau De’Change but the operators of FX street trading.

“For us, we are against street trading and support any action that will remove FX street traders. Their activities affect me also. I have an office but my clients cannot come to my office because of the menace of street traders.”

On the volatility in the FX market, Gwadabe explained that various factors, including the imbalance between supply and demand and liquidity, were responsible.

He urged members of the association to strictly adhere to all FX regulations and conduct their operations within their offices.

On Wednesday, the naira depreciated further to N1,900 against the dollar in the parallel market.

According to currency operators, the naira exchange declined by 9.83 per cent from the N1,730 recorded at the beginning of the week and N170 or 9.82 per cent from the trading rate on Tuesday.

This is even as Bureau de Change operators battle for liquidity to meet the surging demands for the greenback.

On Wednesday, BDC operators quoted the buying rate at N1,850 and the selling rate at N1,900, leaving a profit margin of N50.

Shortly after Shaibu’s declaration as the governorship candidate of PDP in Edo, armed thugs, including members of Edo State vigilance service, were mobilised to the venue and started shooting sporadically.

But Shaibu and his teeming supporters escaped while the hoodlums continued to shoot at their vehicles with many allies of Edo Deputy Governor injured.

Edo Deputy Governor, in an acceptance speech, dedicated his victory to God Almighty, his teeming supporters, and the good people of the South-south State.

As of the time of Shaibu’s declaration, the loyalists of Obaseki were about voting at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium for Ighodalo while the consensus aspirant of Chief Dan Orbih-led Legacy Coalition in PDP, Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, a former member of the House of Representatives, decided to withdraw from the skewed race.

Arrest Of Abure, Insult To Democracy – Kenneth Okonkwo

Veteran actor and chieftain of the Labour Party (LP), Kenneth Okonkwo has condemned the arrest of the party’s National Chairman, Julius Abure, on Wednesday, February 21.

Recall that Abure was arrested alongside the Edo state chairman of the party, Kelly Ogbaloi, and two others, by a combined team of police officers and operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS).

Kenneth, in a statement via X on Thursday titled ‘ARREST OF ABURE; AN INSULT TO DEMOCRACY’, slammed the Edo State Police Public Relations Officer.

READ ALSO: Nigeria Is A Very Poor Country, Our Wealth Is Overestimated – Bayo Onanuga
He claimed that Abure’s arrest was an attempt to disrupt the conduct of the Edo State gubernatorial primary election.

Kenneth Okonkwo argued that the security agency could have waited after the party’s election, adding that Abure should be dealt with if he had committed any breach of the law.

READ ALSO: ’m Too Busy To Think About Second Term As WTO DG – Okonjo-Iweala
The statement read, “The ill-advised arrest and manhandling of the National Chairman of Labour Party, Julius Abure, by an obvious partisan Edo Police Command, is an insult to democracy.

“It is a shame that the incompetent Edo Police PRO, who obviously displayed absolute lack of knowledge of law, could use the phrase “factional National Chairman” for Abure. This is a pure political statement that the police force, as a non- partisan organisation, is forbidden to make.

“Attempting to disorganise Labour Party on the eve of organising its Edo gubernatorial primary election when APC and PDP have failed to conduct theirs successfully shows that the arrest is a political arrow shot against Labour Party to achieve the disorganisation of the primary election.

“The job of the police is the maintenance of law and order, not to forment anarchy. What was so urgent in the arrest of Abure that couldn’t wait until after the gubernatorial primary of LP in Edo. If Abure committed any breach of the law, he should be dealt with in accordance with the law not in accordance with brute force.

“Why has Edo Police not arrested APC Leaders who openly used thugs to scatter the APC Gubernatorial primary election? They were rather quick in arresting Abure who was not even present when Edo people resisted some persons who wanted to extort money from them under the false pretence that they were Labour Party officials trying to organise gubernatorial primary election in Edo. Rather than arresting the extortionists, and the impostors, the Police is arresting the legitimate Labour Party officials in Edo. This must stop.”

Lagosians Groan As Fuel Scarcity Hits Nigeria’s Economic Capital

Despite the National Association of Road Transport Owners calling off its strike, there were still extensive queues observed at numerous filling stations throughout Lagos State.

The queues started building up in some parts of Lagos on Tuesday.

The queue was borne out of fear by Nigerians that premium motor spirit might become scarce as a result of the now-suspended NARTO strike.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, Nigerians stormed filling stations to engage in panic buying.oil theft

It was learnt that the refusal of the tanker drivers to lift fuel on Monday and Tuesday also had affected filling stations owned by independent marketers, many of whom had run out of supply.

In major areas in Lagos, the queues continued to build up, causing traffic gridlock on major roads.

It was observed that the filling stations along the Alausa axis of Lagos, including, Mobil, Total, Conoil and others had long queues.

Also, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited stations in Ogunnusi, Ojodu-Berger and Ikorodu Road had long queues, including Bovas.

Around the Isolo axis, the filling station at Apata Round-about was not selling fuel; it was the same scenario at the Total Filling station located close to Isolo General Hospital.

At Ishaga, an attendant at NPOG filling station told our correspondent that they had run out of fuel in the past three days.

The NNPC and Mobil filling stations at the College Bus stop were also out of fuel.

The Quest fuel station along Asuani Road was the only filling station that dispensed fuel on Wednesday, with a long queue of cars and customers struggling to buy at N640 per litre.

Along Gbagada Road, the NorthWest had a long queue of cars and was selling at N610 per litre, while Eternal at Gbagada Bustop was not selling at the time of filing this report.

When our correspondent visited a fuel station belonging to NNPCL in the Ikotun area of Lagos State, it was observed it was not selling fuel.

On Wednesday, a long queue was noticed at God’s Decision, along Governor Road, Ikotun.

“We learnt that there may be a fuel scarcity soon. They said tankers drivers are going on strike,” one of the customers at God’s Decision said.

In an interview the Vice National President of the Independent Petroleum Marketers, Hammed Fashola, said the queue was caused by the two-day strike embarked upon by the tanker

“The fuel queues were caused by the two-day stoppage of operations by the tanker drivers. By Monday, everything will clear off. The NARTO members called off their strike yesterday (Tuesday) and they resumed loading of fuel today (Wednesday). All the depots are working now,” Fashola said in a phone interview.

Meanwhile, Lagosians have lamented over the fuel scarcity that struck many neighbourhoods in the state.

On X (formerly Twitter), @EricaNlewedim on Wednesday described the development as bad news that was becoming too much.

“The bad news is just too much. What is it? Ahah! And now fuel scarcity, I’m really tired of being an adult in this generation,” the user wrote.
@mhs4lyf, who lamented the situation in Lagos, said he had to trek.

He tweeted, “Fuel scarcity in Lagos and hold up. (I) trekked almost 10km to go home. Thank God for life.”

A user, @honeymiixx, called on President Bola Tinubu to call oil marketers to order, saying, “There’s fuel scarcity in Lagos again! Life is already unbearable for people. Please, talk to the oil marketers.”gabon

@notsocialallen said just at the weekend, he was too lazy to go and buy fuel and “suddenly there’s fuel scarcity in Lagos”.

“There is fuel scarcity in Lagos and they are selling black market fuel for N1,200 and no light since the day before yesterday. Nah this place is hell,” @Thelengygirl posted.

@AAAlatishe wrote, “All the candidates literally said they were going to remove it. But then, you phase it out while having a better power supply everywhere. The subsidy has been removed, now, fuel scarcity everywhere with less or zero power supply. I believe most Nigerians will be okay at buying a litre at N1k, if they will only be using it in their vehicles. This brings me to this question, will we ever witness an uninterrupted 24/7 electricity in this country?”

“Fuel scarcity on top of all these problems is just crazy. Is it that they don’t think we have a breaking point?”@omosalewasmiles asked.

@Dxx_machina wrote, “No light, there is heat. Now, fuel scarcity and we can’t run gen. What the actual heck is wrong with this freaking country?”tinubu

“I’m lost, please what’s this fuel scarcity about? These guys are extremely wicked,”
@Jaaayyyy__ posted on X.

@iamkvngdavid_ lamented he was in a long queue while “trying to buy fuel at N650 per litre, just this evening alone, I’m witnessing fuel scarcity”.

“Is it just me but I find some things very weird. There are no buses due to the fuel scarcity, then traffic,” @DarknSweetheart wrote.

“Fuel scarcity in Lagos. High pump price plus scarcity is hell. Which way Nigeria?”@MfonEssien lamented.

The fuel queues on Wednesday left commuters stranded, forcing car owners to turn to the black market to purchase fuel at inflated prices.

Bobagunwa stated, “Fuel scarcity is intensifying in Lagos. One litre is currently being sold for N1,000 on the black market. I always wonder what if Nigeria doesn’t have crude oil.”

Iniete expressed, “It’s my first time queuing for fuel all alone under the scorching heat in Lagos during this time of fuel scarcity. God, please seriously punish the people, past and present, who ruined this country.”

Babudere lamented, “There is fuel scarcity in Lagos, and black market fuel is being sold for N1,200. Also, there has been no electricity since the day before yesterday. This place feels like hell.”

Oyíndàmọ́lá conveyed, “Dear @NGRPresidentn @officialABAT, there’s fuel scarcity in Lagos again! Life is already unbearable for people; please talk to the oil marketers.”

Ade shared, “I saw the crowd at bus stations this morning as well. I helped the ones I could, but I still got fuel today for 605. Yes, there’s scarcity currently, and the queues are long. But no one is selling for 1000 here in Lagos.”

The tanker drivers on Monday parked their trucks, refusing to lift fuel over the high cost of operations.

NARTO President, Yusuf Othman, in a letter to truck drivers, said NARTO had made several efforts to secure negotiations for appropriate and commensurate freight rates for its operations from all authorities concerned in the industry, especially the major marketers, without any positive result.

However, the major marketers said the decision of NARTO to stop transporting fuel may not have much effect on them, some of whom have separate transporters.

“Unfortunately, the process was corrupted by the several Irregularities that marked the ward congress organized by our party in the state. I and eight other aspirants voiced our dissatisfaction with the transparency of the process and the culpability of the committee that was sent to oversee the process. It was glaring that the process had been skewed to favour a particular aspirant unjustly.

“As committed party members, we followed established processes to express our dissatisfaction by approaching both appeal panels set up to address issues arising from the congress with evidence of apparent violations of the guidelines published by the party.

“Unfortunately, the National Working Committee’s continued intention to deny aspirants a level playing field sadly ignored the recommendations from both panels. This situation has made it impossible to continue with a process In which I have lost confidence in its integrity and credibility.

“Having consulted with my family, key stakeholders, and supporters, I have taken the hard, honourable, and logical decision to withdraw from the process of selecting a candidate for our party for the 2024 Edo Governorship Elections.

TUC Condemns NLC’s Planned Strike

The TUC said since the NLC took the “independent and unilateral decision” on the planned strike, “it there is need to go ahead and implement unilaterally”

TUC Secretary General Nuhu Toro, in a letter to the NLC leadership dated February 19, 2024, expressed disappointment that the Joe Ajaero-led labour group did not carry the Festus Osifo-led trade association along before declaring a planned strike despite that the two groups unanimously issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to implement its agreement with the Organised Labour and address the mounting economic crisis of survival in Nigeria.

The TUC said the 14-day ultimatum will expire today (Thursday) and both centres ought to agree on the next step but the NLC on February 16 declared a two-day protest to commence after the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum it jointly issued to the government.

The TUC general secretary said, “It is important that this is the third time that such unilateral declaration is happening under your leadership, we are therefore constrained to formally put this on record as various discussions, communications and interventions have failed. First and second time could pass as human error but a third time would in our opinion translate to an intentional act to undermine us.

“Also note that we are not averse to the issuance of your resolution because our members equally feel the pain, even if it’s a weeklong national strike, but we have a huge problem with the unilateral declaration for a process we both muted and agreed, because our members are equally concerned about the rising cost of living and not particularly the ultimatum, why can’t we see through the ultimatum that expires within the same period before jointly addressing other issues of mutual concern or at worst consolidate them?

“For the avoidance of doubt, we fully understand that NLC is an independent labour force centre that has the right to take independent decision, it is pertinent that when such decisions are taken unilaterally, there is need to go ahead and implement unilaterally.”

The Department of State Services (DSS) has since urged the NLC to shun the planned strike, pursue dialogue and negotiation, instead of engaging in actions that could escalate tensions but the Ajaero-led group has insisted on going ahead with the industrial action.
