Guava Island: Donald Glover and Rihanna’s Premieres New Movie After Childish Gambino’s Coachella Set

Music star Donald Glover and Bajan megastar Rihanna’s Movie, Guava Island, has premiered after Childish Gambino’s Coachella set.

Right after his musical alter-ego Childish Gambino finished performing at Coachella on Friday night, Glover, 35, dropped his new movie Guava Island on Amazon Prime. The 54-minute film – which also stars Rihanna – has been kept mysteriously under wraps for months and was filmed in Cuba. The movie follows the story of Deni Maroon, played by Glover, a musician who wants to set up a music festival. Rihanna stars as Maroon’s girlfriend, Kofi Novia.

“I’m really humbled having the opportunity to present something this timely and timeless. Between Rihanna and the people of Cuba, this is one of my favorite projects I’ve ever worked on,” Glover said of the film, which is an “expansion of Glover’s idea of freedom” in “creative and business terms.”

Guava Island was written by Glover’s brother Stephen and directed by Hiro Murai, who has worked with Glover on previous projects including FX’s Atlanta and the viral “This Is America” music video.

The film comes on the heels of a successful year for Glover. At the 2019 Grammys in February, Childish Gambino won both record of the year and song of the year for “This Is America.” The singer also headlined the opening night of the Coachella music festival on Friday and dropped the second season of his television show Atlanta early last year.
