Bitcoin Hits Record High Of $44,000 As Elon Musk’s Tesla Invests $1.5b In It

The CEO of Tesla Motors Elon Musk has acquired a $1.5 billion worth of Bitcoin, as he invests in the world-leading cryptocurrency after a Twitter conversation with one Micheal Sayor, the electric car maker has also announced its plans to begin accepting the digital currency as payment for vehicles soon. The California-based company revealed the new strategy in filing with the U.S Securities and Exchange Commission early Monday, saying its investment in digital currency and other “alternative reserve assets” may grow.

Bitcoin spiked 14% and appeared to briefly hit a new all-time high. Shares of Tesla moved higher as well.

Bitcoin’s price surged to a record-high of $44,000 soon after Tesla’s announcement on Monday.   

Tesla, which made the announcement in a US Securities and Exchange Commission filing, said the decision was part of its broad investment policy as a company and was aimed at diversifying and maximizing its returns on cash.

In its fourth-quarter earnings report last month Tesla said it had cash and cash equivalents of $19.4 billion.
