British Johanna Konta’s Wimbledon dream was ended abruptly by an evergreen performance from Venus Williams on Thursday. Venus defied time and the odds over two ragged sets to reach her ninth Wimbledon final at 37, the oldest contender since Martina Navratilova in 1994.
Venus – a five-times champion at her favourite tournament – won with unexpected ease, taking 73 minutes to win 6-4 6-2 and earn herself a meeting with Spain’s Garbine Muguruza.
Venus defeated Britain’s best – and first semi-finalist since Virginia Wade in 1978 – 6-4, 6-2 in front of a Centre Court audience who had earlier been left short-changed in the first semi-final, when Garbiñe Muguruza beat the inexperienced world No. 87 Magdalena Rygarikova 6-1, 6-1 in just 65 minutes.Photo Credit: Getty
