Police Charge Three Men Over Petition Against Officer For Alleged Extortion.

The Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu, has reportedly ordered the arrest and arraignment of one Ikechukwu Uduji (23) and Ikechukwu Okolie (38) for allegedly writing a petition against his Divisional Police Officer in-charge of Awgu Police Division, CSP Benjamin Ugwui for extortion and demand for refund.

KOKO TV NG had reported that Ikechukwu Okolie and someone working with him, Ikechukwu Uduji were arrested on Sunday, October 29 after the child dedication of his nephew following his refusal to dissociate himself from a petition alleging police extortion.

They were detained at the Awgu Police Station after they were tortured and brutalised for two days and on October 31, they were arraigned before Magistrate P. U. Igwilo of the Awgu Magisterial District Holden at Mgbidi on trumped-up charges of attempted murder and serious assault on four policemen who reportedly brutalised him.

In a five-count charge marked No: MGB/71c/ 2023 which KOKO TV NG obtained on Monday, the police commissioner claimed that the two accused persons had conspired to kill four policemen on October 30 at about 6 p.m. along General Hospital Road, Awgu within Awgu Magisterial District.

The charge between the Commissioner of Police Vs Ikechukwu Uduji (M) (23) and Ikechukwu Okolie (38) partly reads:

“COUNT ONE: That you Ikechukwu Uduji (m) and Ikechukwu Okolie (m) on the 30 day of October 2023 at about 1800hrs along General Hospital Road Awgu within Awgu Magisterial District did conspire amongst yourselves to commit felony to wit: Attempted Murder and Serious Assault and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 495 of the Criminal Cod Cap 10 Volume 11 Revised Laws of Enugu State of Nigeria 2004.

“COUNT TWO: That you Ikechukwa Uduji (m) and Ikechukwu Okolie (m) on the same date and time at the aforesaid Magisterial District did attempt to kill one Force Number 534399 PC- Uzochukwu Kingsley by hitting him with cut-to-size iron rod on his forehead while on motion on top of his motorcycle and thereby committed an offense punishable under Section 275 of the Criminal Code Cap 30 Volume 1 Revised Laws of Enugu State of Nigeria 2004.

“COUNT THREE: That you Ikechukwu Uduji (m) and Ikechukwu Okolie (m) on the me date and time at the aforesaid Magisterial District did serious assault one Force Number: 536809 PC- Ekene Onuoha by inflicting injuries on his left hand that caused him bodily harm and thereby committed an offense punishable under Section 259 of the Criminal Code Cap 30 Volume II Revised Laws of Enugu State of Nigeria 2004.

“COUNT FOUR: That you Ikechukwu Uduji (m) and Ikechukwu Okolie (m) on the same date and time at the aforesaid Magisterial District did seriously assault one Force Number 522733 PC-Chidera Nwabudu by inflicting injury on his left shoulder which caused him bodily harm and thereby committed an offense punishable under Section 259 of the Criminal Code Cap 30 Volume II Revised Laws of Enugu State of Nigeria 2004.

“COUNT FIVE: That you Ikechukwu Uduji (m) and Ikechukwu Okolie (m) on the same date and time at the aforesaid Magisterial District did serious assault one Force Number: 536809 PC- Anthony Udeh by inflicting injuries on his right leg which caused him bodily harm and thereby committed an offense punishable under Section 259 of the Criminal Code Cap 30 Volume 11 Revised Laws of Enugu State of Nigeria 2004.”

The duo, according to the charge sheets obtained by KOKO TV NG, didn’t take their plea as the court lacks jurisdiction to entertain the case.

Consequently, Magistrate Igwilo ordered that they should be remanded in the prison,

The magistrate subsequently adjourned the case to December 15, 2023.
