Nigerian Lawmakers Accuse Power And Works Minister Fashola Of Partiality

The face-off between different sectors of the Nigerian executive with the legislative arm does not seem to be approaching an end soon. Reacting to the latest swipe by minister and former Lagos governor Babatunde Fashola at the National Assembly for allegedly hindering the growth of the country, House of Representatives’ spokesperson, Abulrazak Namdas, has accused Fashola and his ministry of not distributing road projects and other developmental facilities equally in their 2017 budget proposal. In a statement by Namdas on Wednesday, June 28, 2017, the judiciary spokesman said lawmakers could not watch the country’s “patrimony unfairly skewed to one region or a few regions to the detriment of other states and geo-political zones”.According to the statement, the National Assembly has a duty to “ensure balance in the distribution of road projects and other developmental facilities” and the proposal from the Ministry of Works, Power and Housing which Fashola spearheads failed to pass the balance test. This informed their decision to indiscriminately readjust the budget without prior consultations with the executive arm of the government.Photo Credit: Getty
