Jurgen Klopp’s “Liverpool Does Not Need To Sign Defensive Back-Up”- Warnock

Liverpool have no need to sign players before the transfer window closes despite their ongoing injury problems in defence, according to Stephen Warnock. Joe Gomez is still a number of weeks away from full fitness as he continues his recovery from a lower leg fracture, while Trent Alexander-Arnold [knee] and Dejan Lovren [hamstring] are both doubtful for Wednesday’s home game against Leicester. James Milner is suspended for the match meaning Fabinho may be drafted into defence if Alexander-Arnold and Lovren are unable to face the Foxes. However, Warnock believes Klopp has enough options to cope without entering the transfer market. “I fully expect, if Georginio Wijnaldum is fit for the next game, for him to go in centre midfield and Fabinho to drop into that right-back position,” said the former Liverpool full-back. “He played there at Monaco before he started playing centre midfield for them.  “It’s a position that he’s accustomed to, he knows it inside out and he’s stepped in the centre-back position quite comfortably when they had their problems there. “Liverpool’s problem is short term. For them to dip into the market and go and sign a player now, I don’t think they really need to.” Liverpool have not played a competitive game since the 4-3 win over Crystal Palace on January 19 and have spent the last week on a warm-weather training camp in Dubai. Warnock believes the break will have helped revitalise the squad as they look to maintain their four-point advantage at the top of the Premier League.  He said: “It was a period where they’ve had these injuries so [it’s good] to get those players back and give them an extra 10 days to try and get as many fit as you can. “Joe Gomez is very close to being ready from what I hear. It will be a nice period for Liverpool. “You can go away, rest your minds, rest your bodies and recuperate a little bit. You know that when you come back it’s the business end of the season.” Photo Credit: Getty
