With regards to the law that states that insulting the Rwandan President is synonymous to doing jail time, the Supreme Court has revealed the truth about the offense. This law which was introduced last year, stating that anyone who insults President Paul Kagame is liable to fave between five and seven years in prison was challenged by a lawyer who said it was unconstitutional. Lawyer Richard Mugisha opined that the law basically undermines the freedom of expression. The court has however maintained that the law will remain due to the responsibility that the office of the president holds. That same court also ruled that any law which prohibits writing articles or drawing cartoons that humiliate MPs, ministers or other government officials should be annulled. Mr. Mugisha also argued that articles which criminalized adultery should be scrapped to which the court rejected his appeal. Photo Credit: Getty
