India’s First Oscar Winner Bhanu Athaiya Dies At 91

Bhanu Athaiya the costume designer who won India’s first Oscar has reportedly giving up the ghost in her sleep at the age of 91.
The nonagenarian was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2012 and had been bedridden since 2016 when her right side got paralysed. Her daughter, Radhika Gupta, reportedly confirmed to TOI on phone that, she however, passed away on Thursday in her home in Mumbai and was cremated at Chandanwadi in South Mumbai.
Bhanu Athaiya, became India’s first Oscar winner for her work in Richard Attenborough’s, Gandhi (1982), and her chic couture in blockbusters like Waqt (1965) blazed fashion trends.
