Endsars Memorial: The Fallen Heroes Shall Never Be Forgotten

October 20, 2020, will forever be a memorable day in Nigeria not for joy, but for the painful memory, of the lives lost on this blessed day where they stood for the Endsars protest. The sound of gunshots rang, and light provided only by cellphones accompanied the night, blood and screams everywhere as young Nigerians who are leaders of tomorrow stood for what they thought, and felt was right.

According to reports from that day, the army and police fired into a crowd of young people, who had gathered at Lagos’s Lekki toll gate to protest the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a notoriously abusive arm of the police. Since that night, that painful event has been termed, The massacre at Lekki. Many Nigerians still clamor for the government to fish out the culprits, as they have claimed that there is no evidence of the killings that took place that day.

The hashtag #EndSARS began trending (again) on social media, as it neared a year that the Lekki Massacre took place. For the fact that nothing has been done, celebrities and fans alike have stated that they will once again protest at that same spot, where they killed their brothers and sisters. It is indeed touching, patriotic, and heroic to see young leaders of tomorrow, take a stand to make their nation better. This year’s protests follow on previous activism and government announcements that SARS would be demobilized in 2014, 2015, and 2017.

And yet, SARS officers continued to act with impunity, committing armed robberies, rapes, other acts of torture and extrajudicial killings. As a result of the protest, numerous young lives were lost, and this one of the major reasons Nigerians have said they will protest again, to mark the memorial of the lives lost on the 20th of October, 2020. They do this in order to let the government know that they will never forget the Lekki Massacre. No matter how the government tries to to turn a blind eye, promise and fail or refuse to take a step on unveiling the truth of this day, which has now been termed Black Tuesday, the lives lost will never be forgotten, as they forever remain in the hearts of Nigerians for their sacrifice to a good cause.
