Nigerian virtual reality docufilm Daughters of Chibok has made it to the screen of the ongoing 76th Venice Film Festival, and will be broadcast at the international event after its successful screening in Nigeria.
The Director of the movie, Joel Kachi Benson made this known via a post on his Instagram page, where he revealed that the documentary is representing Nigeria and Africa in the festival’s virtual reality category. He expressed how great he feels to be at the event, competing stiffly with some of the best virtual reality filmmakers from across the globe.
Sharing a picture of himself at the event venue, he wrote, “Live in Venice at the #venicefilmfestival, where our VR documentary #daughtersofchibok is having a world premiere and representing Nigeria and Africa in the festival’s virtual reality category“. In another post, he wrote, “Feels great to be here…standing shoulder to shoulder with some of the best minds in Virtual Reality filmmaking from across the globe at the 2019 Venice Film Festival. We’re here…repping Naija ?? and Africa.”
The movie’s storyline is said to be that of the abduction of 276 female students from Government Secondary School, Chibok in Borno State, Nigeria, in April 2014. It centres on Yana Galang, a woman leader in Chibok, who after her daughter was kidnapped with other girls hopefully awaits her return as she struggles to get past daily life as a peasant farmer.

According to NAN, Daughters of Chibok is among 12 other Virtual Reality films selected from France, China, Japan, Australia, United Kingdom, USA, Italy, Taiwan, Israel and other countries.
