Burning And Dumping Of Refuse Now A Criminal Offence In Ogun State

The Ogun State Government has read the riot acts, warning against the burning of refuse in the state. The government also said it has become a crime to dump refuse on the road in the state. Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun

The government said this at a press briefing jointly organized by the ministries of Physical Planning and Urban Development; and Environment in commemoration of 2021 World Habitat Day.

The Commissioners for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Olatunji Odunlami and the Special Adviser to the governor on Environment, Ola Oresanya warned the people against engaging in dangerous acts that could lead to the generation of carbon dioxide.

Speaking on this year’s theme “Accelerating urban action for a carbon-free world”, Olatunji said it was aimed at focusing on the serious impact of carbon footprints in urban centres and the steps towards its reduction and zero generation.

Giving the warning against burning and dumping of refuse on the roads in the state, Oresanya described the acts as wicked and illegal.

Dapo AbiodunHe said, “Burning of refuse is an act of wickedness, it is illegal, your next neighbour may be asthmatic and you are killing him. We don’t tolerate it in Ogun state. On no account must anybody burn refuse in Ogun state under no condition.

If your refuse is not collected by waste disposal agents there are numbers to call. Call us to pick your refuse. It is your right, don’t take it to the roadside. We have big bins on the roads, they are mainly for markets, it is not for household use, it is for markets.”
