I really like my girlfriend and I want to propose to her on her birthday – but I know her wealthy father will disapprove, as he thinks I don’t treat her right. I am my girlfriend’s first proper boyfriend and we met in university. She is 27 and I am 33. Her father says I’m not aspirational enough and do not know how to treat her well. He says she will throw her daughter out if he agrees to marry me.
It is true that I do not ‘aim high enough’ and I have nearly slapped my girlfriend but I am going to change. I know she can change me. I have to prove to her father I can treat her right but it feels like I’m fighting a losing battle. Thank You, Segun. Surulere
Dear Segun,
Yelling and almost slapping your girlfriend is physical and emotional abuse. Will you allow your own daughter to marry a wife-beater? Don’t rely on her to change you, no matter how special she is. Only you can change who you are – but expert help can make that much more likely and will help convince her father you are serious.
