Dear Aunty Aurora,
Thank you for all your insightful responses to various questions on your platform. I have really learnt a lot and that is what has prompted me to send in mine as well. I will like to go straight to the point without giving too much background to the story. I have been married for a while now and it has been a really good union.
Recently though, my husband started smoking and not only do I find it disgusting because of the smell, but I fear for his health as well. He never had the habit from the beginning but according to him, he is only trying to relax and take his mind off our current financial issues. Please how do I help him to quit this unhealthy habit?
Sharon, Festac.

Dear Sharon,
Being concerned for your husband’s health is quite understandable but the truth of the matter is that for you to really be able to help him, he has to be willing to quit. He has to realise the dangers of his new habit and be willing to stop it because he knows the benefits and not just because you want him to.Because nicotine is addictive, quitting can be difficult. But you can suggest some things that may help him. Just knowing that he has your support can make him more likely to succeed.
Deciding to quit doesn’t mean thoughts of smoking go away at once. It takes time for cravings to fade, and it can take a person more than one try to successfully quit. Most people who quit don’t do it on their own. They get a lot of help and support from friends, family, and significant others. Many smokers already know the risks that this habit entails. Still, the increased risks of lung cancer and heart disease are often not enough. Some smokers don’t even realise the emotional and physical damage their habit has on loved ones. Secondhand smoke is hazardous to your health too and if you have kids, he has to know that he puts them at risk as well. I believe your husband is not so far gone that he can’t quit smoking soon if he wants to, all he needs is a reason to quit ad help. As always, confrontations will hardly get you the result you want, so, when making your points always have in mind that you are a team and not warring factions. Do let me know how it goes.
Aunty Aurora.
