But never to worry, 2020 is not a year of spending over budget, so KOKOnistas, we need to get it right with this wig thing once and for all! so on the beauty segment today, we will be looking at 5 ways to maintain and keep the synthetic wig sleek at all times and durable for longer use.
1. Store Well: It is recommend that you store your wigs either on a stand, mannequin head or if need be, in the original box. Tossing, tangling, tying, knotting or rubbing frequently so reduce the sleekness and shininess of the wigs. When your wigs are drying on a stand, you may need to store it in a room with natural airflow.
2. Never Use Curling Iron: In the quest of taking care of your synthetic wig, always remember that it is not heat-friendly and so, never use curling irons, flat irons, blow dryers, ovens, stoves, campfires or anything of extreme high heat on them. Heat will damage the synthetic fibre and can drastically reduce the life span of your wig.
3. Rejuvenate With Fabrics Softener: Fabric softener, as its name implies is used on fabrics or sheets when drying clothes as it prevents static cling on clothing in the dryer. Mot only is it useful for clothes, however, it has been tested and trusted helpful in eliminating static cling on the synthetic fibres used in wigs. So dousing your synthetic wig in two parts liquid fabric softener and two parts cold water mixed well together can be the magic for your wig. You can use as much or as little of both as you choose, but make sure they are of equal parts. After 10-15 minutes, remove and wrap the wig in a towel (don’t rub the towel against the wig, simply dab) and let it sit on a wig stand, to allow the excess mixture air-dry. This may be best done overnight or some hours before use so it doesn’t seem to take too long to dry off. Or, if you want to do this in the morning or as a quick fix before going out, you may lightly spray the wig (add in a little quantity of hairspray to the mixture) and let it air-dry as you are on the go.

4. Use Synthetic Products Only: Never make the mistake of using human hair products on synthetic wigs, they will make your wig stiff. Regular human hair shampoo, conditioner, hair spray or gels will cause build up on the wig, shortening its life span and dulling the hair fibres. Use only brushes, combs that, conditioner, shampoo and all other products that are designed for synthetic wigs alone.
5. Hydrate Daily: As it is not advisable to wash your synthetic wig as frequently as possible, it is critical that you hydrate daily with leave-in conditioner. Natural hair is kept hydrated with oils from the scalp. This, of course, does not happen with wigs or hair add-ons.
EXTRA: Some Dos and Don’ts for your synthetic wig!
  • Make sure you detangle it before washing with a wide-tooth comb not a brush.  Start combing the strands at the ends, and begin working up towards the base as it becomes detangled.
  • To wash, mix cool water with wig shampoo in a sink or basin (never use a washing machine) and soak your wig for five minutes, or a little longer depending on how soiled it is. Even if your wig is quite soiled, never rub, twist or wring it. Gently dip it up and down in the water. If there are makeup stains on the cap, clean them gently with a small brush (like a toothbrush). Then rinse your wig gently but thoroughly in cool water and condition (with synthetic wig conditioner leave-in or rinse thereafter, anyone will be just fine)
  • Never place a wet wig on a Styrofoam head or a blockhead which can stretch the wig cap
  • Never comb a wet wig or attempt to speed dry it with a blow dryer. Air-drying is your best bet. Photos Credit: Getty
