17-Year-Old Boy Reportedly Commits Suicide In Bauchi

The Bauchi State Command of the Nigeria Police Force on Thursday said that a 17-year-old boy identified as Betwom Timothy, committed suicide.

Regretting the tragedy, the command said the teenager who hailed from Bombar in the Bogoro Local Government Area of the state hanged himself on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, for unknown reasons.

The Command’s spokesperson, Ahmed Wakil, who disclosed the unfortunate incident to journalists in Bauchi, said the deceased left his house for a stream to take his bath but did not return home.

This development, however, prompted his family to form a search party, and eventually, his lifeless body was found hanging on a tree in a bush, he explained.

The statement reads: “We received a report from a good Samaritan that today being the 13th September 2023 at about 3.00 pm, that on the 12th September 2023 at about 5.00 pm, his nephew, one Betwom Timothy who is 17 years old, left home to take a bath at the stream but he did not return home.

“So, the family organised a search team for him and they eventually found his body hanging on a tree with a sponge and feces on his trousers in a nearby bush at Bogoro town.”

Wakil said after the Command received the tragic report, the state police commissioner, CP Auwal Muhammad, directed the DPO Bogoro Division and detectives to move to the scene.

He said that the police team evacuated the body to the General Hospital, Bogoro where a doctor on duty confirmed him dead on arrival.

His remains according to the statement were given to the family for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.

“The Command wishes to commiserate with the family of the deceased and prayed that God Almighty will grant them the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

“The Command is using this medium to call parents and guardians to maintain strict vigilance on the activities of their children and wards.

“It is now pertinent more than ever before that their whereabouts and the company they keep are constantly in check by all those responsible.

“Community leaders and elders should also keep an eye on what is happening in their communities and ensure that they handle any situation before it degenerates,” Wakil said
