It’s been a very busy week in the Nigerian music scene. There’s been a number of releases, from singles and collaborations, to EPs and other projects. Not to forget the subtle disses and backlash.
Like we do every week, we bring to you some of the hottest songs released recently. This week we bring you songs from Tobi Laud, 3rty, Soundman Silva and others.
1. Bella Alubo – Gbolahan
Produced by Tuan Malik, this Afro-swing song laced with a tingle of the RnB is Alubo’s first single of the year 2020..
The lyrics of the song is a juxtaposition of many of the popular lines from other artistes, including the “dark shades on, know you can see me” from Burna Boy; “tryna love me like a gangster” from Darkovibes.
The song is easy and just washes over you, as Bella’s voice fills the headphone or speaker. It is a song for low-key parties and hangouts.
2. Tobi Laud – Come Closer
There’s something about Laud and the energy he brings on every track. His delivery is unique and powerful as always. The instrumental is as is common with Gen Z language, ‘lit’. The allusion to Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the hook makes it all the more interesting.
3. Wavy The Creator – Black Card
After a long hiatus from music, Wavy makes a comeback with a beautiful song. One thrilling thing about the song is almost at the end of it, where she leaves the DJ Breezy produced instrumental to keep playing. It is pure genius.
4. Blvckyboy – Jumong
“I’m blind for your love, oh Jumong… Come shake that body…let me take you to party around 9:30”. The Hausa vibe around this song might be laughable but catchy.
5. 3rty – Ice CreamWhile the title of the song is wrong, the story-telling and the voice of the artiste blend amiably well with the slow instrumentation.
6. Soundman Silva – Bank On It (Burna Boy Cover)The final track on Burna Boy’s Twice As Tall album could not have gotten a better cover.
7. Nailah Blackman X Medz Boss
We leave Nigeria and take a trip to Trinidad where we’ve got this beautiful calypso, dancehall-fusion song. Blackman sings, “Oh lawd, call me night robber/Thief a likkle wine from yuh smooth like butter/From yuh get it once yuh bawl for yuh muda/If yuh go, Pop down, Don’t bother.”
The honest truth is that you just can’t hate the hard-work Nailah puts into her music and we’ll, Medz Boss? You obviously don’t expect someone with such a stage moniker to flop. Keep listening music addicts and catch you next week. Xoxo.Photo Credit: Instagram
