Godswill imminent move from Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC)
It is no longer news that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has benefited most from the recent turn of politcal events and has had the last laugh however, the All Progressives Congress (APC) is now set to enjoy some respite by receiving Senator Godswill Akpabio into her party. A debate has arisen bothering on his motive for considering political life outside PDP. Given the characteristic practice of politicians in this part of the world to cite the divine to justify their positions and actions, one is compelled to inquire about what could have caused the PDP chieftain to overly fraternize with APC chieftains.
Having served as Akwa-Ibom State governor for eight years under the shelter of the umbrella, a regime fraught with whispers of embezzlement of public funds, Godswill Akpabio’s political influence can hardly be contested. His emergence as senator and senate minority leader in the national assembly were considerably made possible by the PDP political platform he is affiliated to, for now. He seemed content until politically suggestive pictures of him kowtowing to President Muhammadu Buhari in London surfaced and a tweet from Senator Ita Enang announcing the planned elaborate admission ceremony of Senator Akpabio into the APC confirmed suspicions. Why Akpabio’s defection now? While one school of thought argues that his move was necessitated by a desire to step out of the shadows of Governor Udom Emmanuel and avert prosecution for corruption-related offences by the government, another maintains that it was done to curry favour from the ruling party in its power allocation.
Thus,in any angle Senator Akpabio’s intended defection is viewed from, the clarity about it being motivated by personal, self-serving reasons rather than the will of his constituents or even God is so evident. As the general elections draw closer, Nigerians are in for more drama to unfold.
