Court Overturns Death Sentence For Bride Who Murdered Her Rapist Husband

 A court sitting in Sudan has overturned the death sentence of teenager Noura Hussein who murdered her husband after he raped her. The court has issued a new sentence which sees the 19-year-old been given a five-year jail term for killing her 35-year-old husband. Hussein’s case which gained international attention brought about outrage and several petitions worldwide calling for the sentence to be dropped following the teenager’s story, throwing light on the issue of forced marriage and marital rape in Sudan. Sudan a country where the legal age for marriage is 10 and marital rape is not seen as a crime.  Hussein was forced into marriage by her family at the age of 15 after she was allowed to finish school. Three years later, after her very public marriage, her husband tried to consummate the marriage on their “honeymoon.”  Hussein said she was raped adding that his family held her down. The next day, he again tried to rape her and she stabbed him to death. Hussein then went to her parents for support but was instead handed over to the police.  Photo Credit: Getty
