Tuesday match between Belgium and France is not just about the players, as Thierry Henry finds himself in a pivotal situation.
It is going to be an interesting semifinal for French soccer legend, Thierry Henry, and the internet continues to ask if he would celebrate a Belgium goal, having seen the way he reacted when his Belgium side defeated Brazil in the quarterfinals. “I think this team (Belgium) can write history,” Henry said during a press conference ahead of Belgium’s last group game victory over England.
Henry is France’s all-time leading goalscorer with 51 goals in 123 caps, and he was a member of the teams that won the 1998 World Cup on home soil and Euro 2000 alongside current French boss Didier Deschamps. The 40-year-old is the assistant manager to Belgium coach Roberto Martinez, a role he’s occupied since 2016, and together they are looking to stop France from winning their first World Cup since 1998.
“What we didn’t have was international experience, the know-how of winning a World Cup, the know-how of being a footballer, how you are expected to perform in front of the world and knowing how you feel in those moments,” Martinez said on Monday.
“Thierry Henry brings that as an ex-footballer of elite thoughts. Then he is a coach, his dedication, attention to detail and is trying to help any player in this squad, so he was the perfect missing piece in our technical staff.” Henry is in charge of coaching Belgium forwards including Romelu Lukaku, who’s scored four goals in the ongoing World Cup tournament in Russia.
