Nigerian champions, Super Eagles have mercifully knocked Benin Republic’s Squirrel on its head in its homeland, Port Novo, to remain the best qualifying team of group L.
Recall that the Nigerian team had headed to Benin Republic on a boat cruise on Friday 26th March to meet its rival in group L for the ongoing AFCON 2021 qualifiers. The super Eagles had qualified for the match after Lesotho and Sierra Leone drew 0-0 in Group L.
As at the first half time both the Super Eagles and the Squirrel were at nil goals. 9 minutes into the second half saw the Squirrels David Kiki suffer a yellow card, followed by its Sessi D’Almeida. Super Eagles’ Paul Onuachu saved the day for Nigeria with the added-time goal which leaves the Squirrels’ qualification in the balance.
Nigeria wins the group, while Benin Republic and Sierra Leone will clash in Freetown on Tuesday to decide where the second ticket goes. Benin Republic, however, has a three-point advantage over the Leone Stars.
