President Muhammadu Buhari has defied the urgings and appeals of the Ohaneze Ndigbo group as well as Reno Omokri’s call for an Igbo COAS, and appointed Major-General Farouk Yahaya as the new Chief of Army Staff, COAS.
Recall that the the immediate past army chief, Lieutenant-General Ibrahim Attahiru died in a Kaduna air-crash along with 10 other military officials on Friday 21st May, and were laid to rest on Saturday 22nd in Abuja, in the absence of the President and other Governors.
The appointment of Farouk Yahaya by President Buhari, who is the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria was confirmed in a statement signed and released today by the military spokesperson Brigadier-General Onyema Nwachukwu. “#DHQUpdate PRESIDENT BUHARI APPOINTS NEW CHIEF OF ARMY STAFF The Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Mohammadu Buhari has appointed Major General Farouk Yahaya as the new Chief of Army Staff”, the statement said.

Giving an insight to Farouk Yahaya’s portfolio before his appointment, the statement added, “Prior to his appointment Major-General Yahaya was the General Officer Commanding 1 Division of the Nigerian Army and the incumbent Theatre Commander of the Counterterrorism, Counter-Insurgency military outfit in the North East code named Operation HADIN KAI”, the statement said.
