The President of the Community of Madrid, Cristiana Cifuentes resigned on Wednesday after a viral footage showed her being detained in Spain for shoplifting.
The 53-year-old politician had been under pressure to step down since last month, after several reports claimed that she and another prominent politician received master’s degrees without doing any form of research work.
According to New York Times, Cifuentes announced her resignation hastily at a news conference on Wednesday. She also disclosed that she had made her decision before the video of her being detained by a security guard in 2011 for stealing facial cream went viral.
She said: “I leave with my head held high. I leave with a bitter feeling from a personal point of view. But I leave very proud, I leave very satisfied.”
