Olorunrinu Oduala is a media strategist and Twitter influencer cum advocate by the virtue of her activeness in the movement against the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) – #EndSARS, and now, the latest panelist on the Lagos Judicial Panel.
Rinu was walking on the streets of Lagos with her kid brother of about ten years old one day when some SARS officials on their black jacket pulled up in a bus right in front of them, causing a lot of people on that street to run for their lives except her who stood there.
The officers came down from the vehicle and began harassing a young man who had gone to buy food, throwing his food on the floor, and the young man kept asking what he had done. In the stead of been given a civil explanation, he received numerous slaps and beatings as response, and this got Rinu so hurt and wishing that her brother never has such an experience when he eventually grows older and taller.
This must be one of the things on Rinu’s mind, pushing her to join in the protests, actively, being one of the influencers on the streets of Alausa, and eventually ending up becoming one of the members of the Lagos Judicial Panel. She had hoped that the protests bring forth a change, and the demands of the youths, and the panel, must be one of things the youths look forward to seeing its effect. As she joins the panel, alongside filmmaker Majekodunmi, here are some things to know about Rinu Oduala:
Rinu Oduala is a 300 level student of chemistry from the Lagos State University
She is the convener of Operation Sanitise, a movement spanning across several cities in Nigeria, providing hand sanitizers to Nigerians during the heat of the COVID-19 pandemic. In March, while certainty still filled the air about the Coronavirus, she volunteered to produce hand sanitizers for Nigerians’ safety.
She galvanized members of the public to donate and contribute to securing the needed materials. The initial target was to prepare 10,000 bottles of sanitizers, but this target has far been surpassed, extending beyond Lagos to Oyo, Osun, Ondo, Ogun, Benue and the FCT, and leading to the donation of over 20,000 free hand-sanitizersRinu Oduala had led a protest back in June against rape and Police brutality, alongside about 12-15 of her friends following the death of Uwavera Omozuwa in Benin City and Tina Ezekwe in Lagos. They had marched to the Commissioner of Police with a letter on their cause but could not gain his attention as they were not many. She had lost focus and derailed in her mind when Davido was to meet with the Nigerian Police PRO in Abuja as she wanted to quickly jump in the flight and fly out with the superstar but quickly came to the realisation of the needs and importance of the protests and redirected her mind, and today, she is one of the panelists who will look into brutalised citizens’ cases and interrogate erring Police officers.
