The local Government Area is also known as Grassroot government and that’s because it is the closest government to the people. In Nigeria, there are 774 local government areas.

Each local government council is headed by a chairman, who is the chief executive, and other elected members, who are referred to as councillors. Each LGA is further subdivided into a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 20 wards, they are called Local Council Development Areas (LCDA).

The LCDA is headed by Councillors, who report directly to the LGA chairman. The councillors fall under the legislative arm of government in the Local Government set-up.

Definition of Local Government

Local government is a generic term for the lowest level of government within a particular sovereign state. This particular usage of the word government refers specifically to a level of administration that is both geographically localised and has limited powers.

How many Local Governments are in Nigeria

Nigeria has 774 local government areas (LGAs), each administered by a local government council consisting of a chairman, who is the chief executive, and other elected members, who are referred to as councillors.

Types of Local Governments in Nigeria

The are various types of local government in the world, but there are four types of local government practised in Nigeria. They are;

Municipalities, Regional Municipalities, Rural Communities (RC), Local Service Districts (LSD).

Functions of the Local Government

The local government is responsible for a range of vital services for people and businesses in defined areas. Among them are well-known functions such as social care, schools, housing and planning and waste collection, but also lesser known ones such as licensing, business support, registrar services and pest control.
