Minister of Information and Culture Lai Mohammed reportedly called for the arrest of a radio journalist Rotimi Jolayemi, popularly known as Oba Akewi.
This is coming to light after the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights CDHR called out the Minister, insisting that the presenter was illegally detained for 12 days.
Oba Akewi was said to have recited a poem on air which criticised Lai Mohammed and the latter in turn, had the former and his family members arrested and detained by the Federal Investigation Bureau of the Nigeria Police Force, Abuja.
In a statement by the CDHR National President, Dr Osagie Obayuwana on Monday, the committee expressed its worry, noting that the journalist’s wife and two of his brothers were arrested and detained for 8, 9 and 2 days respectively while the journalist was been sought.“Mr Jolayemi is said to have been arrested by the police at the instance of the Minister for Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, on account of a poem read over the radio, considered critical of the minister. It is worrisome that Alhaji Lai Mohammed would have a hand in the arrest of the wife of Mr Jolayemi, Mrs Dorcas Jolayemi, and two of his brothers who were kept in detention for eight days, nine days and two days respectively as hostages, while the journalist, Mr Rotimi Jolayemi, was being sought.” Read also: 776 People Arrested By FRSC In Ogun For Breaching Lockdown Rules
“Furthermore, that even since Mr Jolayemi surrendered himself to the police headquarters at Ilorin, Kwara State on May 6, 2020, he is still being held till date, 12 days later, without being charged to court or granted bail”, part of the statement reads.
