KOKOnista of The Day: Thuso Mbedu Is Africa’s Golden Girl Making Waves In Hollywood

Thuso Mbedu is a South African actress whose work has gained her so much fame internationally.

Thuso Mbedu is a talented South African actress who was nominated for an Emmy Award for her role in the telenovela Is’Thunzi, which was called one of the most compelling television programmes on South African television.

Thuso Mbedu was born on the 8th of July 1991. Thuso Nokwanda Mbedu was born and raised in Pelham, a borough of Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal. Her mother passed on due to a brain tumour when she was 4 years old. She was raised by her grandmother as her mother had separated with her father before she was born.

Her granny’s name was Thokozile, while her mother was called Gladness.

Thuso went to Pelham Primary School and attended Pietermaritzburg Girls High School. When Mbedu was eighteen, she attended the University of Witwatersrand, where she studied Physical Theatre and Performing Arts Management, resulting her graduating with an honours. 
In 2012, she attended the Stella Adler Studio of Acting in New York, USA. Thuso landed a role on Isibaya in 2013. In late 2014 she had a small role in the second season of the Mzansi Magic soapie isiBaya, before landing her role as journalism student and wild child Kitso on Scandal!.

She then had a guest role as Kheti on the second season of the SABC 2 teen drama series Snake Park.
After being jobless for six months, Thuso landed her first starring role in television in the Mzansi Magic teen drama series Is’thunzi, which premiered in October 2016.
Thuso Mbedu recently made the list of the eight most sensational faces on the small screen right now and globally recognised for her lead role on Academy Award winning director, Barry Jenkins’s adaptation of “The Underground Railroad” on, which will be streaming on Amazon Prime.
