Ace Nigerian singer, songwriter, actress, human right activist, social activist, journalist and politician Onyeka Onwenu has faulted the popular notion and advise that spouses and partners should stay in an abusive marriage because of their children. In her books and opinion, if the spouse truly cares about the children, then he or she would save him or herself first.
Onyeka Onwenu said this during an interview with Chude Jidonwo, where she spoke about her marriage to her ex-husband that produced two sons, suffering abuse and getting out of the abusive situation, the rumours that she’d slept with all of the powerful Nigerian men and about refusing a marriage proposal from the legendary Fela Kuti.
“You get to a point when you have to say, “I’m done making sacrifice”, and if you really care about your children, you’ll save yourself because it could have killed me”, she said. Recalling how she came out, Onyeka Onwenu said it took her brother calling her aside to tell her she was losing herself.

Speaking on the rumoured relationship with Obasanjo and the secret marriage they reportedly had, Onyeka Onwenu hinted that if it were true, there was nothing to hide. “Ahnhan, what is this? If he’s going to marry me, then we’d make it public”, she said.
