Tottenham striker Harry Kane has become the first player in 22 years to win both the Premier League’s Golden Boot and top the assists charts in the same campaign.

The England international, who has recently declared his desire for a new challenge away from north London, netted his 23rd goal of the season in Sunday’s clash against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium.

Jamie Vardy opened the scoring from the penalty spot, but Kane equalised shortly before half-time with a brilliant volley that flew between Kasper Schmeichel’s legs and into the back of the net.

Vardy netted a second from the spot to have Leicester dreaming of Champions League football, but a Schmeichel own goal levelled the scores before Kane set up substitute Gareth Bale to give Spurs victory, with the Welshman netting a second at the death to make it 4-2.

Kane’s nearest competition was Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, who had been tied with the Spurs forward going into the final day, but the Egyptian failed to net against Crystal Palace despite the Reds winning 2-0.

Astonishingly, Kane’s latest strike and assist takes him to 37 goal involvements in the Premier League this season, beating his previous best return in a single campaign (36 in 2016/17). He has 44 goal involvements across all competitions.

It is the third time the 27-year-old has won the Golden Boot in his career, tying him with Alan Shearer, and only Arsenal legend Thierry Henry has won it more often (four times).
But Kane has done something Henry never managed, also leading the assists charts this season in addition to claiming the Golden Boot.

Kane’s 14 assists edges out Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes and Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne (both 12), meaning he has also been crowned Playmaker of the Season.

Only two other players have ever topped the scoring and assists charts in the same campaign: Andy Cole in 1993/94, when he scored 34 goals and laid on 13 assists, and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink in 1998/99 when he scored 18 goals and supplied 13 assists.

Three other players have topped the goal and assists charts in separate seasons but not the same campaign: Henry, Didier Drogba and Robin van Persie.

Although Spurs have had a disappointing season, finishing seventh and only qualifying for the Europa Conference League, Kane has enjoyed a remarkable campaign and gave another reminder of his class in what might have been his final outing for Spurs.
