Cristiano Ronaldo Breaks European Championships Record In Portugal’s Win Against Hungary

Cristiano Ronaldo is now the all-time leading goalscorer in European Championship finals history after his brace guaranteed Portugal all three points in their Group F opener against Hungary.

It looked set to be a frustrating evening for the Juventus star, who squandered the best opportunity of a match dominated by the reigning champions when he ballooned a Bruno Fernandes centre over the bar during the closing stages of the first half from the edge of the six-yard box.

Spurred on by a capacity 60,000 crowd in Budapest, Hungary looked destined to secure an unlikely point before Raphael Guerreiro’s deflected shot put Portugal ahead in fortuitious circumstances with just six minutes remaining.


Moments later, Rafa Silva was bundled over in the box and Ronaldo stepped up to power home the resulting penalty and in the process score his tenth goal in European Championship finals history, overtaking legendary former France captain Michel Platini in the process.

The 36-year-old’s work for the evening was far from over, however, and he added to his astonishing international tally in injury time, rounding off a superb team move involving which again involved influential substitute Rafa Silva.
