‘Writing My Book Was Therapeutic…Acknowledging You’re In Pain Is The First Step’…Gabrielle Union Opens Up On Sexual Assault, Failed Marriages And Finding Joy

American actress Gabrielle Union wrote in her autobiography that she suffered after experiencing trauma in her younger years. And the 45-year-old star told the April issue of Good Housekeeping that penning the memoir really helped her work through those issues.‘Writing my book, We’re Going To Need More Wine, was therapeutic…whether I was talking about sexual assault, failed marriages, or finding joy in being my authentic self,’ she said. ‘Acknowledging you’re in pain is the first step.’Gabrielle – who was married to ex-NFL running back Chris Howard from 2001 to 2006 before going down the aisle with her current NBA star husband Dwayne Wade in 2014 – released her memoir this past October. She added that having toxic people in your life is very taxing. ‘If anyone in your life is making you feel bad…they need to be cut off. Give yourself permission to let go.’ And she tries to spread joy when she can. ‘I feel a responsibility to be a decent human being to everyone and accountable for my actions. I want to leave every room I enter brighter than how I found it,’ said Union. The star also talked about fashion. ‘If your soul is singing, you’re going to look freaking amazing no matter if you’re wearing couture or a dope thrift store find. Fashion comes from the inside out,’ said the Bring It On actress.Gabrielle, who also posed for the magazine in an $88 Rebecca Minkoff Girl Power sweater, said: ‘I’m super-influenced by street style and Instagram. For my New York And Company line, I gather inspiration from around the world and try to put a little practicality in there; I’m all about materials that are breathable and flattering and still allow you to eat!’Photo Credit: Good Housekeeping
