He asked Tinubu to give Kanu contracts like ex-President Goodluck Jonathan did with Niger Delta militant leader, Tompolo.

Fayose said Kanu’s release would help Tinubu get more votes from the Southeast in 2027.

In a video on his Instagram handle, Fayose said releasing Kanu would reduce the level of insecurity in the Southeast.

According to him: “Releasing Nnamdi Kanu will reduce crime in the South-East by 50%. And APC will get more votes in 2027.

“If President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan can give a contract to Tompolo to have peace in the Niger Delta, why can’t we do the same in the South-East?”

“If we are spending so much money on security in the Southeast, the money will be reduced by 50% releasing Kanu,” Fayose advised.

He added that, “If I were president Tinubu, after the election, when I noticed that the Southeast people didn’t vote for me, I would have released Kanu to counter them; releasing Kanu can make some of them say, ‘oh this man has a good intention’”.

He made the call amid an appeal by the 2023 Labour Party, LP, presidential candidate, Peter Obi and other Nigerians that Tinubu should release Kanu.

The leadership of the House of Representatives has resolved to look into alleged misinformation by a Plateau lawmaker, Hon. Yusuf Gagdi, against Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere and 39 other lawmakers, who paid Governor Siminalayi Fubara a solidarity visit in Rivers State.

Recall that Ugochinyere had led about 39 lawmakers on a solidarity visit to Governor Fubara, to attend the first anniversary of the governor in Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital on June 2.

At the House plenary on June 4, Rep. Gagdi citing Order Six, Rule One, said his privilege as a member of the House was breached by the visit of some lawmakers to Mr Fubara.

He stated that Rep. Ugochinyere had issued a statement to the press on the visit, giving the impression that the lawmakers represented the House. He further claimed that the lawmakers were members of the Local Content Committee who were in Rivers State on an overnight assignment but used the opportunity to pay a courtesy visit to the governor.

But, countering Gadgi’s claim, Ugochinyere and 39 other lawmakers at the plenary on Tuesday, June 11, raised a point of Order 6 on matters of privilege of a malicious and false publication allegedly instigated by Hon. Gagdi.

Ugochinyere, who represents Ideato North/South Federal Constituency of Imo State, explained to the House that contrary to Gadgi’s claim, he and 39 other lawmakers went on a solidarity visit to the Rivers State governor.

Presenting proofs as reported by various national dailies, Ugochinyere said they went on their own and not on behalf the House of Rwanda, and joined Governor Fubara on a thanksgiving service in Port Harcourt to celebrate his one year of transformational leadership.

He also presented proof that they were not members of the House Local Content Committee as claimed by Gagdi.

The lawmaker, therefore, called for sanctions against Gadgi in line with the House rules.

Ugochinyere said, “Gagdi alleged that we went to port harcourt on oversight function as members of local content committee. If you go to page 38 of the directory the membership of local content committee, we are not members of local content committee, and Mr Speaker we did not go on any oversight function. A group of like-minds on our own not on behalf the house, went on a thanksgiving service in port harcourt to celebrate Governor Fubara one year of transformational leadership. This was published in several newspapers, Hon. Gagdi deliberately and maliciously spread falsehood on the floor of this parliament that we went for oversight function thereby committing contempt of parliament and misleading this parliament.

“All of us that went to Rivers state, went specifically for the sole purpose of celebrating with Governor Fubara, not politicization of oversight function. We are asking that this privileged that has been abused to be addressed in line with the provisions order 6 rule one and two and section 2 of the legislative privileges act, which states that any person who presents any false or fabricated documents with intent to deceive shall be guilty of an offense and liable to conviction for imprisonment for 12 months and also removed as a member of the legislative house.”

Thereafter, the Speaker of the House, Hon. Abass Tajudeen, who presided over the session, assured the affected lawmakers that the House leadership will intervene by inviting Gagdi to discuss the issue.

The National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party, Shehu Gabam has called on the Federal Government to increase minimum wage to N100,000.

Organized Labour koko tv ngAccording to him, this will allow Nigerians workers breathe.

Gabam made the appeal when he was featured as a guest. The development comes barely one week after the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress, embarked on a nationwide strike to demand an increased minimum wage for workers and the reversal of the recently increased electricity tariff.
The industrial action was however suspended for five days after the labour leaders signed a commitment with the Federal Government to resume negotiations and come up with a new minimum wage within a week.
Last Friday, the Tripartite Committee concluded its meetings as both the FG and the Organised Private Sector agreed on N62,000 while Labour pegged its demand to N250,000.

But Gabam insisted that the government will do itself a favour by settling for a reasonable wage that is above N100,000 to avoid civil servants sabotaging the system.
He said, “For me, what I think at this stage is that the government should do something above N100,000. It is reasonably okay. It makes a little bit of sense. People can breathe, and people can go to work without thinking of sabotaging the institutions.NLC

“You are paying civil servants and other private employees just N30,000. And then when you go to the market, there is nothing of the lowest that you can get at the cost of N30,000.”

The SDP chief also chided Nigerian governors for announcing that payment of any minimum wage higher than N60,000 was not sustainable.
This was even as he appealed for a review of the fuel removal subsidy policy.

“Any serious governor that can put his priorities right can pay N60,000 comfortably,”
Gabam insisted, noting that if ghost workers are purged from the system, states can pay it. The tragedy is that the majority of the problems we are having today are from the states. The governors are contributing largely to the problem.
He added, “They have to consider reviewing this subsidy. I’ve mentioned this severally, you can get it right with the rate of subsidy the way it is. This government initiated this crisis by removing the fuel subsidy and naturally, they don’t need to be told that there are consequences that will follow.

“What we expected is that by the time the government made up its mind to remove the fuel subsidy and the pains that would follow thereafter, the consumption rates, the supply rates, and the demand rates of the nation, no one can stand it,” he concluded.

The Kogi Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Abuja has fixed May 27 to deliver judgment in the petition filed by Social Democratic Party (SDP) and its governorship candidate, Murtala Ajaka, against the election victory of Gov. Usman Ododo.

The three-member panel of justices, headed by Justice Ado Birnin-Kudu, announced the date on Thursday in Abuja in a message communicated to counsel to the parties through its secretary, David Mike, and made available to newsmen.

Kogi had, on Nov. 11, 2023 held its off-cycle election in which Ododo of the All Progressive Congress (APC) emerged winner beating his closest rival, Ajaka of the SDP with a wide margin.

Ajaka, dissatisfied with the outcome of the election, had filed a petition before the tribunal, challenging Ododo’s victory.

The case, which commenced in December 2023, came to its highest point on May 13 when SDP, Ajaka, APC, Ododo and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) adopted their final written addresses, after which the tribunal reserved judgement in the petition.

KOKO TV NG reports that  INEC, Ododo and his party, APC, had prayed the tribunal to dismiss Ajaka and SDP’s petition in its entirety for being incompetent and lacking in merit.

INEC, Ododo and the APC had, through their lawyers; Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN; Joseph Daudu, SAN and Emmanuel Ukala, SAN, respectively, had told the tribunal so while adopting their final written addresses and presenting their arguments against the petition.

However, Ajaka’s lawyer, Pius Akubo, SAN, had urged the tribunal to discountenance the respondents’ submissions and uphold their petition.

In his argument, INEC’s lawyer, Chief Agabi, had told the panel that the petition lacked merit and incompetent, urging the court to strike it out or dismiss it.

“It is our humble submission that your work in the determination of this petition is simplified in recent judgments by Court of Appeal and Supreme Court,” he said.

Iran

Ultraconservative Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi was killed Sunday, along with his foreign minister, in a helicopter crash in Iran’s remote northwest, injecting fresh uncertainty as the country’s hardline clerical establishment navigates rising regional tensions and domestic discontent.

The loss of two of Iran’s most influential political figures comes as the country buckles under significant economic and political strain, with tensions with nearby Israel at a dangerous high.

Drone footage of the helicopter wreckage taken by the Red Crescent and carried on Iranian state media showed the crash site on a steep, wooded hillside, with little remaining of the helicopter beyond a blue and white tail.

Sunday’s crash occurred as Raisi, 63, and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian were returning from a ceremony for an opening of a dam on Iran’s border with Azerbaijan, state media reported.

Among those onboard were three crew members, the governor of Eastern Azerbaijan province, an imam, Raisi’s head of security chief and a bodyguard, according to IRGC-run media outlet Sepah.

The crash prompted an hours-long search-and-rescue operation with assistance from the European Union and Turkey among others, but emergency crews were hampered by the thick fog and plummeting temperatures.

READ ALSO: Israel Launches Retaliatory Strike Against Iran
The death of Raisi comes at a sensitive time domestically for Tehran and seven months into Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza that has sent tensions soaring throughout the Middle East — and brought a decades long shadow war between Israel and Iran out into the open.

Last month, Iran launched an unprecedented drone and missile attack on Israel — its first ever direct attack on the country — in response to a deadly apparent Israeli airstrike on Iran’s consulate in Damascus.

Under Raisi, Iran’s hardline leadership has faced significant challenges in recent years, convulsed by youth-led demonstrations against clerical rule and grim economic conditions. Iranian authorities have launched a widening crackdown on dissent since nationwide protests broke out over the 2022 death of a young woman in the custody of the country’s notorious morality police.

Following the official announcement of Raisi’s death Monday, Iran’s government convened an “urgent meeting” as the clerical establishment, headed by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, prepare to appoint a new president they can throw their support behind.

Next in the line of presidential succession is Vice President Mohammad Mokhber, who must be approved by Khamenei, the final arbiter of domestic and foreign affairs in the Islamic Republic.

The Iranian constitution also mandates that the three heads of the branches of government, including the Vice President, speaker of the parliament, and head of the judiciary, must arrange for an election and elect a new leader within 50 days of assuming the role of acting President.

In a statement Monday, the president’s cabinet praised Raisi as a “hard-working and tireless” president who served the people of Iran to help advance and progress the country. “[He] stood by his promise and sacrificed his life for the nation,” the statement said.

The cabinet also reaffirmed that there “will not be the slightest disturbance” in the administration of Iran in the wake of the deadly crash.

On Monday, Iranian state broadcasters took to airing Islamic prayers in between news broadcasts, while a photo shared by IRNA showed that the chair that Raisi usually sits in was vacant and draped with a black sash in memory of the president.
