It is no longer news that Paul Pogba, the Manchester United midfielder has admitted he needs a new challenge, throwing his future at the club into serious doubt.
Paul Pogba admitted he wants a fresh challenge throwing his future at Manchester United into doubt. The World Cup winner has already been linked with a move to Real Madrid this summer and his surprisingly honest confession could spark a summer-long transfer saga.
The Frenchman endured a turbulent campaign at Old Trafford last season, falling out publicly with Jose Mourinho before rediscovering his form under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. But Pogba’s displays tailed off towards the end of the season as United put in below par performances. When asked about Pogba’s future at United, Solskjaer revealed in a press conference he wanted to build a team around the 26-year-old.
Speaking to reporters in Tokyo on Sunday the 26-year-old admitted: “I think for me it could be a good time to have a new challenge somewhere else. I am thinking of this: to have a new challenge somewhere else.”
The club also remain confident that despite his comments the Frenchman will stay at the club and be a crucial member of the first team for next season. But should Pogba seal a shock move away from Old Trafford, there are plenty of options for Solskjaer to mull over.
Here are 7 of the best midfielders United can pursue in the transfer window should the France international leave…
1 . Youri Tielemans: The 22-year-old midfielder impressed at Leicester City on loan from Monaco last season. The Belgian scored three goals in 12 appearances and proved he is more than capable of putting up with the rigours of Premier League football.
2 . Wilfried Ndidi: Another Leicester midfielder who is ready for a step up. Ndidi’s bullish and rapid style of play would very much please United fans who are looking for a star to take control of the middle of the park. The Nigerian also admitted that he’s flattered by the United speculation.
3 . Bruno Fernandes: A name that is everywhere this summer and for good reason. A high of 19 goals in 31 league appearances would certainly fill the scoring void left by Pogba. He can also set up a goal too, registering 13 assists in Portugal’s top tier.
4 . Tanguy Ndombele: Ndombele’s strong and commanding displays in the Champions League last season have seen him become of interest to Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City. Spurs appear to be leading the race for his signature but if Pogba does leave then United should seriously think about hijacking their transfer.
5 . Christian Eriksen: Eriksen has also said he wants a fresh challenge in recent weeks. Real Madrid looks like the most likely destination for the Dane but not if Pogba gets there first. Going from runner-up in the Champions League to playing regular Europa League football is quite the ask, but the chance to play Old Trafford is not to be sniffed at.
6 . Adrien Rabiot: The only free transfer on this list. Since making his bed at Paris Saint-Germain the midfielder has been given virtually no game time, but his talent is by no means in question. And being a free transfer is hugely appealing – United could sign the 24-year-old and another name on this list. His attitude may be of concern but he’s well worth the risk.
7. Ivan Rakitic: Speaking of experience, 31-year-old Rakitic could help bridge the gap between reserves and first team for some of the club’s younger players. While the likes of Scott McTominay and Andreas Periera fight for a first team place, Rakitic’s guidance and deliverance could be crucial for when they’re ready to make the step up full-time next season.
