With many Premier League clubs down to the bare-bones after Covid outbreaks and the postponements likely to cause a fixture pile-up, the upcoming January transfer window could be even more important than usual.

There is also the Africa Cup of Nations to consider. The tournament runs from January 9 to February 6, leaving certain sides without key players for nearly a month.

Paul Pogba, Antonio Rudiger, Cesar Azpilicueta and Alexandre Lacazette are among the Premier League stars out of contract in the summer, and that could see them secure deals elsewhere in January, a month that looks set to be full of incomings and outgoings.

When does the January transfer window open?

The Premier League January window in England opens on Saturday, January 1, 2022 and will run for the whole month.

When does the January transfer window close? Premier League clubs have until 11pm GMT on Monday, January 31 to sign players.

That will then be it for the rest of the season, with the end of the window potentially seeing something of a mad dash as clubs look to fill the added gaps in squads caused by the Africa Cup of Nations and Covid outbreaks.

What about Europe? The transfer window in Germany and France opens on January 1, while in Spain and Italy the window begins on January 3. Just like in England, these European leagues have until January 31 to add to their squads.

Premier League players with deals expiring in the summer are able to sign pre-contract agreements with European clubs in January.
