Tottenham have announced the record signing of Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombele.

The deal, believed to be in the region of £60million, smashes Tottenham’s previous club transfer record of £42m, which saw centre-back Davinson Sanchez arrive from Ajax in 2017. Ndombele joins from Ligue 1 side Lyon and becomes Tottenham’s second signing of the summer, and the day, after the addition of Leeds winger Jack Clarke earlier on Tuesday.

The Frenchman has signed a six-year deal with Tottenham and is the club’s first major signing since Lucas Moura joined Spurs from Paris Saint-Germain in January 2018. Ndombele helped Lyon finish third in the French top-flight last season and has already featured six times for his country, France.

Mauricio Pochettino has demanded a big summer from Spurs after failing to sign a single player in the previous two windows. Ndombele was coveted by a host of rival clubs, including Manchester United, who reportedly failed in a late bid to hijack Spurs’ deal for the 22-year-old.

After undergoing his medical on Tuesday, Ndombele will link up with his new team-mates next week when the squad report for pre-season. Tottenham’s spending is expected to continue as Pochettino aims to build on an excellent 2018/19 season that saw Spurs reach the final of the Champions League.
