“When You’re Poor, You Are Faceless, Nameless And Voiceless”, Aisha Yesufu Recounts Growing Up Very Poor

The saying “everyone has a story to tell” is not just a group of words that makes meaning but a reality of life, and our Woman Of The Year, Aisha Yesufu is not exempted in having indeed a great story to tell for her personality and fights for a better Nigeria.
In the exclusive session with the KOKO Team, Aisha Yesufu, who prefers to be called an active Nigerian in the stead of an activist, revealed how she had grown from a very poor family which could not afford daily meals.
“I grew up very poor. There was a time in my life when I would go to school in the morning without breakfast, and I would come back home not expecting lunch. It was a very hard time. When I wrote my SSCE in 1991, I begged people to give me text books so that I’ll be able to get A’s but I never got those text books. I knew how it was being poor, when you’re poor, you’re faceless, nameless and voiceless, you’re not seen as a human being”, she said.

Speaking further, she revealed how her family would have nothing to eat for days, and would take solace in the well in their compound. “I lived in a house where, there were days we didn’t have food at all. When I say at all, I mean at all, the only thing we had was water from the well in our house. When hungry, you drink it till your tummy becomes full, and later when hunger comes in, you carry the water again and drink all through the day”, she added.
