Daytimes during this holy period are quite slow-paced, while post-sunset, the atmosphere in the city is nothing less than that of a carnival.

Mosques in the city are well-lit, while the restaurants are also quite crowded. Travellers can witness traditional folk dances as well as different street performances. The Blue Mosque, also known as the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, is a must-visit place in Istanbul, especially during this holy month of Islam. Tourists here can find a large number of vendors selling religious books as well as delectable local cuisine.

Cape Town is the largest Muslim community in South Africa. The predominant Muslim community is visible in Bo-Kaap (koekisters are a must) and Athlone, where there are 9 mosques in Bo-Kaap alone, with even more in the central city area. A place of historical importance, Bo-Kaap is a colourful (literally) neighbourhood with many halal eateries – perfect for Muslims!

The birthplace of Muhammad is one special place to visit during the month of Ramadan. It is also fitting to under Hajj, the Muslim pilgrimage, during this period of fasting and celebration. While in Mecca, you can witness the Qiamullail prayers, which take place before Suhur, the pre-dawn meal. Mecca also celebrates several Ramadan bazaars where you can enjoy a good time with your Muslim brothers and sisters.

Dubai is a tourist hotspot all year round, but during the month of Ramadan, Dubai is even more enchanting. In addition to the tourist amenities that Dubai offers on a regular basis, visitors during Ramadan can participate in events organized by the local government, aimed at educating and reminding the public of the meaning and importance of the Holy time.
