Just yesterday, the upper chambers of the Nigerian legislative arm said they would not capitulate its constitutional power to the Executive arm of government, saying the Senate and House of Representatives “will not serve as a rubber stamp to the executive arm.” This statement was credited to the the speaker of the house of representative, Yakubu Dogara. The contention between the two arms of government was a reaction to a statement made by the acting president Prof Yemi Osinbajo who said that the National Assembly had no jurisdiction to introduce new projects into the newly passed national budget. The acting president also emphasised that the last budget which the President Buhari presented last December was not approved by the house until May despite the assurances that it will be passed by February. The senate however made it clear to the executive arm of government that it shouldn’t mistake its discourse with it on essential national issues to mean that it was ready to let go of its constitutional powers. Kebbi’s Sanator Bala IBN Na’Allah although cautioned that the acting president must have been quoted out of context on the 2017 budget and a mountain should not be created out of nothing.Photo Credit: Getty
