Veteran Artist, Yusuf Grillo Dies At Age 86

Grillo’s death was confirmed to be true by his son, Gboyega Grillo. The son of the deceased confirmed the passing of his father to the News Agency Of Nigeria in Lagos on Monday, August 23, 2021. Papa Grillo was 86-years old.

Gboyega revealed that his father died in the early hours of Monday, Aug. 23rd. The son of the deceased could not hide his emotions, where he said he was pained that he wasn’t able to speak to the media, due to the shock and preparations toward the burial.
Professor Adebayo Yusuf Grillo is considered one of Nigeria’s most outstanding and vastly academically trained painters of his generation and one of the greatest Nigeria has ever produced.

Yusuf Grillo was a contemporary Nigerian artist, born in 1934, who was known for his inventive works and the prominence of colour blue in many of his paintings. He made use of his western art training in many of his paintings, combining western art techniques with traditional Yoruba sculpture characteristics.
His preference for the colour blue in natural settings, painting is sometimes similar to the Adire or resist-dye textiles used in Nigeria.
He was a former Head of the Department of Art and Printing, Yaba College of Technology in Lagos State. He was the first president of the society of Nigerian Artists.
