US First Lady Jill Biden Makes Unannounced Visit to Ukraine, Meets With Ukraine’s First Lady

First lady Jill Biden made an unannounced visit to Ukraine Sunday, meeting with the nation’s first lady, Olena Zelenska, near the country’s border with Slovakia.

Dr. Biden traveled to the town of Uzhhorod in western Ukraine for a meeting with Ms. Zelenska in a small classroom. She told Ms. Zelenska that she “wanted to come on Mother’s Day,” and it was “important to show the Ukrainian people that this war has to stop.”

She is the latest high-profile U.S. official to enter Ukraine during its conflict with Russia, a list that has included Secretary of State Antony Blinken and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Dr. Biden has been traveling in the region, stopping in Romania and Slovakia.
