Nigerians on social media have come out to express mixed reactions over the proposed name change of Nigeria to the United African Republic. The proposal was reportedly submitted by Adeleye Jokotoye, a tax consultant on Wednesday, June 2, 2021, to the House of Representatives.
While presenting the proposal, he said Nigeria’s current name was an imposition of its past colonial masters and should be changed. He said a change of name for the country would physically and psychologically reflect a new beginning. A lot of reactions have trailed the move on social media. Furthermore, Jokotaye had revealed that a name change would herald a new beginning.
Consequently, the Special Committee on Review of the 1999 Constitution has confirmed it is set to debate the proposal for a name change to United African Republic.
