Sickle Cell Anemia, The Unpredictable Disease
Sickle cell anemia is a group of disorders that cause red blood cells to become misshapen and break down.
With sickle cell disease, an inherited group of disorders, red blood cells contort into a sickle shape. The cells die early, leaving a shortage of healthy red blood cells (sickle cell anaemia) and can block blood flow causing pain (sickle cell crisis). Infections, pain and fatigue are symptoms of sickle cell disease but because of the fact that a lot of people are not aware that they are sickle cell, they do not test to find out if that is the cause of the constant pain, fatigue and infections that they feel. Treatments for sickle cell anemia include medication, blood transfusions and rarely a bone-marrow transplant.

Some SS patients have it hard as they are almost always in a crisis while some do not go through the bouts of crisis that some go through. Sickle cell is an unpredictable disease because each crisis differs from the latter. Each crisis comes with its own level of pain and anguish. One is not able to use the same yardstick for the last crisis for a new one. The fact that SS patients can not tell when they will be down with a crisis because it just comes and goes broadens the uncertainty of this disease. So far, doing a bone-marrow transplant is one of the very few cure for this disease, but not many have been able to survive it.

Considering the fact that the cure is far fetched, most SS patients have to live with the constant pain and unpredictability of it.
From the way they live, the places they go, what they eat, drink, how they live is done with uttermost care and caution, so as not to cause them more pain than they are already in. The crisis that SS patients go through can go on one days, and weeks even; just the same way they can’t tell when a crisis will come, that is the same way they can’t tell when a crisis will be over. Most patients have to depend on the medication, and injections given to them to reduce the pain that they feel. The life of a SS patient is an uncertain and unpredictable one because they can’t always plan ahead for tomorrow, they instead take life one step at a time. Over the years, many have died from sickle cell anemia and many have survived. Society should keep on creating awareness on the importance of knowing your genotype and also how to treat with love and kindness sickle cell patients.
