FIFA World Cup: Politics And The Choice Of Qatar

The long awaited 2022 FIFA world cup is upon us, fans all over the world are excited about the four years tournament, but there are some questions, on why FIFA will allow Qatar host the world cup, despite its conservative stance on alcohol consumption, LGBTQ rights, open party, and the extreme heat in the country.

The Bid

In 2010, Qatar clinched the rights to the World Cup after winning a ballot of Fifa’s 22 executive members, beating bids from the US, South Korea, Japan and Australia.

It is the first Arab nation to host the tournament.

Qatar was accused of paying Fifa officials £3m ($3.7m) in bribes to secure their backing, but was cleared after a two years investigation

At the time, Fifa’s then-chairman, Sepp Blatter, supported the bid, and has come out to say that the decision was wrong and they shouldn’t have awarded them the competition.

Expectations

Qatar is home to 2.9 million people in total, but they are expected to welcome 1.5 million visitors from around the world.

Fans can only drink alcohol at the bar, or in their rooms, and cannot display open nudity or PDA throughout the duration of the tournament.

For the accommodation, the country has provided 60,000 rooms in apartments and villas, 50,000 rooms in hotels, 9000 beds in the game village, and 4000 rooms on two cruise ships.
