2023: Gunmen Bomb Imo INEC Headquarters

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters along Owerri Port Harcourt road in Imo State came under heavy bombardment by gunmen in the early hours of Monday.

The gunmen threw grenades through the commission’s fence, destroying several offices and vehicles parked on the premises.

However, the police stationed at the INEC office engaged the gunmen in a heavy shootout , leaving three of the gunmen wearing charms and Biafra camouflages dead.

INEC public relations officer, Dr. Chinenye Chijioke-Osuji confirmed the attack to reporters at the scene.

The electoral commission has been under frequent attacks by unknown gunmen in the area, since last year. Earlier in the year, gunmen invaded three of their offices, burning strategic electoral materials, and documents.

The chairman of the electoral commission, Professor Mahmud Yakub, in a recent plea to security agents, appealed that the life and property of the commission is not safe in Imo state and other states in the South East.

A faction of IPOB, led by Simon Ekpa issued five days sit at home order last week, and urged his followers to maim anybody that goes against his order. He also threatened that there won’t be any elections in the South East next year.
