Unai Emery Names Granit Xhaka As Arsenal Captain

Arsenal manager Unai Emery has reportedly decided to make Granit Xhaka the club’s permanent captain.

Unai Emery has made Granit Xhaka Arsenal’s permanent captain, according to media reports. The Spaniard introduced a pool system when he took the reins at from Arsene Wenger at Arsenal in 2018, and rotated between five skippers.

The five players selected were: Laurent Koscielny, Petr Cech, Aaron Ramsey, Mesut Ozil and Xhaka. Three off these players have now left Arsenal, leaving only Ozil and Xhaka as candidates.

German midfield Ozil has done little to convince Emery he deserves a place in the Gunners’ first team this season, let alone wear the captain’s armband.

And according to BBC Sport, Emery has decided to scrap the ‘five captains’ idea and just hand Switzerland international Xhaka – who has skippered the Gunners in every game so far this season – the armband on a permanent basis.
