Knocking out Deontay Wilder last Saturday made Tyson Fury a guaranteed $28 million. But if Fury fights Anthony Joshua this year, Fury’s dad, John Fury, said his son will need to earn about 10 times more than that.
In an interview with iFL TV on YouTube, John Fury said that if Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn wants Tyson Fury to agree to face Joshua in what would be one of the most significant heavyweight boxing showdowns in history, Hearn would need to put up $500 million and split it 50-50 between Tyson Fury and Joshua. In other words, Fury said his son is worth $250 million.
It’s because Fury said his son “isn’t going to sell himself cheap no more.”
“Tyson is No. 1 and Wilder is definitely No. 2,” John Fury said. “Unless Eddie Hearn can come up with half a billion for the fight, it’s not going to happen, is it? Because that’s what it’s worth … He’s got to get some serious money out of them, some serious money because my son is worth all the money in the world. If you’re talking about what you’re talking, [Fury vs. Joshua] will never happen. So dig deep in your deep pockets because it’s not going to happen.”
Aside from his demand of nine figures for the fight, John Fury also wants to make sure the matchup takes place in the U.K. and not anywhere else in the world. Since both fighters are British, he said the fight should be contested in their home country. But yeah, it’s mostly about the money that can be made.
“A half a billion for the two fighters, that’s what I’d be asking for that fight,” John Fury said. “Split down the middle. Let them get on with it. It’s the biggest fight in the world.” Otherwise, John Fury said, he has another idea. “What more can [Tyson Fury] do? He’s won everything,” Fury said. “… He’s contracted, and they want to milk it. For my money, retire now.”Photo Credit: Getty
