French President Emmanuel Macron has said the brief mutiny led by Yevgeny Prigozhin shows the “fragility” of the Russian army.
He also said it justified the support the West has been giving to Ukraine.
Speaking to The Provence newspaper, Mr Macron said he was following events “hour by hour, in conjunction with the main partners of France”.
He added: “The situation remains evolving, but it shows the divisions that exist within the Russian camp – the fragility of both its armies and its auxiliary forces like the Wagner Group.”
The French president went on: “All of this must make us very vigilant and fully justify the support we are giving to the Ukrainians in their resistance.”
