If you like art, the very first place you should go to in Lagos is the Nike Art Gallery. The Nike Art Gallery, Lagos is one of 4 art centres owned by Nike Davies-Okundaye. The gallery is arguably the largest of its kind in West Africa. Housed in a five-storey tall building, it boasts a collection of about 8,000 diverse artworks from various Nigerian artists.Conspicuously written on its roof and noticeable from at least 1.5 miles away is “NIKE ART GALLERY”, ostentatiously informing every passer-by along the Lekki-Epe expressway of the presence of the gallery. The location and height of the building also makes it a desired destination for tourists in Lagos as the white beach sands of the Lekki peninsula on which it rests stretch east-west through tens of kilometres, sandwiched between the Lagos lagoon on its northern flank and the Atlantic Ocean to its south.Standing on the topmost floor of the gallery gives one a breath-taking sight of both water bodies flanking the peninsula.Nike’s quest to further promote, enhance, sustain and provide enabling environment for the growth of African cultural heritage in Nigeria moved her to set up the five floor ultra modern art gallery in 2009, with the main purpose of positively transforming the landscape of the hitherto neglected art and culture in Nigeria. The inside of the gallery is beautiful from its unusual doors to its bright white walls covered in all sorts of art work ranging from paintings and sculptures to fabrics and mini-installations.  With so many pieces of art to look at, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed so we suggest you go one day, get a feel of all the floors then go back at other times focusing on one floor each time you go.
