#ThrowbackThursday: Where Are The Original Mo’Hits Crew Now?

Once upon a time in a nearby land called Nigerian music, there were certain magical fairies that were responsible for all the angelic choral hits in the land. Any song topping charts in the land almost always had links to this group of magical fairies who named themselves the Mo’Hits Crew. Churning out all-time hits like Pere, Pop Something, Bumper2Bumper, Entertainer, Suddenly and Booty Call, this group comprised of the grandmaster Don Jazzy, the playmaker D’Banj, the secret weapon Wande Coal and knights Dr Sid, D’Prince, and KSwitch. Then a big bad wolf named Kanye came from a foreign land to entice the playmaker to desert the group with fake promises of untold treasures in this foreign land. This led to rift within the group which finally culminated in the dissolution of the group. So five years since we heard the last hit from Mo’Hits, what has happened to the original gang members?
Don Jazzy
The legendary music producer went on to start another record company named Mavins and he had proven that he’s no fluke – guiding the new company to the top of the music industry once again. It is home to some of the country’s top stars with Tiwa Savage, Iyanya and Korede Bello all affiliated with Don Jazzy’s new company.
D’Banj
After his unsuccessful sojourn abroad, D’Banj has had a hard time holding the home base spellbound as he once did although he still commands a loyal cult following. He’s yet to have a serious and consistent musical campaign in Nigeria ever since but that doesn’t necessarily mean his bankers are not smiling. He is recognised for his business acumen with investments in agriculture, music and technology.
Wande Coal
The black diamond might have been best served if he had persisted with his former boss Don Jazzy. His independent sojourn has yielded mixed result with equal hits and misses. But his new affiliation with Maleek Berry and former record mate D’Banj might be the dawn of a new day for Wande.
Dr Sid
The most exciting we’ve heard from Sid since 2012 has been his marriage to celebrity stylist Simi and his one-time hit Kabiyesi. His post-Mo’Hits career has been underwhelming and more than disappointing from the man that ruled club DJs’ decks with “Pop Something”.
D’Prince and KSwitch
The achievements of this duo after Mo’Hits has been so mediocre that they do not deserve to be addressed individually. Not a surprise though as their inclusion in the original Mo’Hits was always suspected to be based on family ties. D’Prince was Don Jazzy’s brother while KSwitch was D’Banj’s. But even then the former gave us Omoba and Jonzing world while we always looked forward to the latter’s “Rastaman” flavour on songs he featured in. They each continued trailing the coats of their brothers after the dissolution of Mo’Hits with next to no success afterwards.Photo Credit: Getty
